The Rey Simulation

Rey. Image by Leonardo.

Below on this blog page is Chapter 6 of a science fiction story called "191988". Near the end of Chapter 3, Eddy and Rey were once again taken into the Hierion Domain for re-programming of their memories, this time together.

The events depicted in Chapter 6, below, take place inside Nyrtia's Simulation System. During their time together inside the Simulation System, both Eddy and Rey are once again forced to return to a cognitive state in which they do not believe that the bumpha and probots actually exist.

The success of Manny the bumpha's plan depends on Eddy and Rey remaining under the control of Nyrtia, the Overseer of Earth. Nyrtia enforces the Rules of Intervention, but Manny finds ways to bend those rules.

Rey was in her room, responding to emails from Eddy's fans who were making plans to attend Eddy's next book signing event. When she heard voices carrying down the hallway, she closed her laptop and quickly got dressed then went to the great-room where she was introduced to Marda.

Then Tyhry came up from her workshop in the basement and Zeta performed another round of introductions. Tyhry and Marda had previously seen each-other in future visions and now they shook hands and it seemed like they did not want to let go of each-others hand.

Just then, Marda's phone rang. "Yes, I'm Marda Onway. Really? Okay. Thank you." Marda ended the call and told Zeta, "They are shipping my suitcases up here by UPS. They found all four of the big suitcases in the wreckage of your car."

Eddy sat down at his computer workstation and woke up his computer. Zeta told Rey and Tyhry, "Just as we were coming up the driveway, we got a call from the medical clinic in Mayer. They released Anthony this morning."

Tyhry asked, "Anthony was taken to Mayer?"

"Apparently, he was pulled out of the I-17 landslide and taken by helicopter to Mayer."

Even as the fate of Anthony was being discussed inside, a car pulled up out in front of Casanay and Anthony popped out. He ran into the house and through the great-room and down the hallway to his room. He soon returned and paid off the driver. Entering the great-room again he closed the front door and said, "I lost my wallet." Walking through the room towards the kitchen he said, "I'll prepare lunch".

Zeta grabbed Anthony's arm and demanded, "What happened to you?"

Anthony shrugged. "I don't remember too well."

"Were you hit on the head?"

"I suppose. The doctor said my x-rays were negative. I feel fine." He went to the kitchen.

Zeta sighed, "Well, that's weird. I'm just glad he's okay." Zeta gestured towards the back window. "Let's eat out back." Zeta followed Anthony to the kitchen and asked him to put lunch sandwiches on the table that was out back on the terrace near the pool. Then Zeta took Marda out back and Tyhry followed along.

Seeing that Eddy was already at work on his computer, Rey went to her room, got her laptop and returned to the great-room. Sitting in the big recliner behind Eddy she opened her laptop and returned her attention to the long list of waiting emails that were in the Virunculus inbox.

Eddy turned in his swivel chair and gazed at Rey. Rey glanced up briefly and was expecting Eddy to speak. When he said nothing, she paused in her workflow and looked up again. With Eddy still intently looking at her, Rey patted her hair and asked, "Do I have a scorpion crawling on me?"

Eddy chuckled. "Sorry. I'm thinking about Anthony. Until that clinic called, I feared he was dead."

"Zeta has nagged both you and Anthony for years about the idea of going to see a doctor." Rey mused, "How Anthony survived getting trapped in that landslide is spooky. Maybe we should take him to see Doc Hath in town, just for a check-up."

"Just to have his head examined?" Eddy shrugged. "Anthony seems fit as a fiddle. I've never seen him sick a single day since he started working here. He must have been born under a luck star."

Eddy fell silent, but continued staring at Rey. She asked, "Why do you keep looking at me so intently... do I have three eyes?"

Eddy sighed. "Something is different"

Rey suggested, "We've had a shock. First we lost Anthony then he magically re-appeared. It does not seem real."

Eddy seemed to gather his wits and he said, "I've reached a decision. I want you to write that story that we have talked about."

Rey recalled from two months previously when Eddy had most recently spoken to her about the idea that she should write a science fiction novel. Rey had not taken the suggestion any more seriously at that time than she had the other dozen or more times in the past that Eddy had encouraged Rey to try her hand at writing. "If you insist, but I should wait until after the book signing. I'm too busy right now to dream up a plot."

Eddy contradicted Rey. "Now is the perfect time. You have been handed the plot. Anthony."

"What about Anthony?"

"The novel will be called 'Nyrtia's Agent' and will show how Nyrtia deploys observers on Earth. The main character will be Anthony, a femtobot agent working for Nyrtia... he appears to be a man who cannot die."

"A novel about Anthony, with Anthony as a character? And he survives the landslide?"

"You'll have to change the name." Eddy turned back to his computer and asked Gemini to invent a name for a character in a science fiction story set in 2025.

Gemini suggested: "Mason Indrel."

Eddy turned again to face Rey and told her, "Call your character Mason Indrel."

Rey closed her laptop. "I believe you are serious about this."

Eddy nodded. "The story practically writes itself. Marda is a time traveler from the far future, sent back in time to create the first conscious robot on Earth."

Rey giggled and asked, "Both Anthony and Marda are in the story?"

Eddy explained, "The arrival of Marda triggers a Reality Change. Just change Marda's name to something else."

Rey suggested, "I really like the name 'Lassy'."

Eddy grimaced. "She's a time traveler, not a dog! Anyhow, the name is not important."

Rey asked, "What if I want the title of the novel be 'The Adventures of Lassy'?"

Eddy asked, "If you are trying to get out of writing "Nyrtia's Agent', you need to try harder."

"I'm not trying to get out of anything. You've tried unsuccessfully to get me to write for decades. Why must it be now when I'm getting ready for the next book signing?"

"Make time for this writing project." Eddy suggested, "Any tasks for Virunculus that are finance related, just hand them off to the new finance guru that Zeta will soon hire."

"I don't think that's why Zeta is taking on a new employee. My understanding is that Zeta has been looking for someone who could deal with big projects, such as figuring out tax payments."

Eddy had already lost interest in Rey's concerns about not having the time to start writing a novel. "So, you have the start of 'Nyrtia's Agent', all you need to do is decide on the ending."

Rey composed the world's shortest novel: "Lassy traveled back in time and targeted Mason, a femtobot replicoid. Lassy placed the zeptozoan that she had brought from the future inside Mason, allowing her to turn Mason into a simulation of a conscious robot, calling it the 'Mark I prototype' that she claimed to have built in her basement. Thrilled by the amazing abilities of the prototype, investors with deep pockets flocked to get in on the ground floor of Lassy's new robotics company, Au'Cybot. Within ten years, the Au'Cybot factories were producing a million robots a year. The end."

Eddy laughed. "If Anthon- er, Mason is a femtobot replicoid then that explains how he survived the land- how he appears to be immortal."

Rey sighed. "I'm afraid you have done this kind of time travel plot to death. Your readers deserve something new and different."

Eddy reminded Rey, "We have to be thinking about your readers." Once again Eddy was carefully examining Rey, almost as if he had never seen her before. After his eyes had roamed up, down and across all of Rey's sexy curves, he began trying to imagine an alternative to her rel name: Reynette Cummings. He asked, "Do you intend to publish under your real name or will you use a pseudonym?"

Rey shrugged and asked, "How did Zeta come up with the name 'Alice Gersen' as her public persona?

"That was after Tyhry started attending school and Zeta was getting bored. She was reading the works of Jack Vance and had just completed The Book of Dreams. Zeta told me that she has a weakness for redheads and that she liked the Alice character."

"Zeta has a thing for redheaded girls? Interesting." She patted her hair and asked, "How would I look with red hair?"

Eddy replied, "Zeta likes you just the way you are." For a moment Eddy tried to imagine Rey with red hair. He had a brief fantasy of Rey with red pubic hair.

Rey was again feeling the force of Eddy staring at her. She followed Eddy's eyes and glanced down at her pants. "Is my fly open?"

Eddy said, "Sorry, I was just picturing you with red hair," then he said, "Anyhow, Zeta was upset with the ending for the Demon Princes saga and was complaining bitterly. I asked her how The Book of Dreams should have ended and she said that there had to be an explanation for Treesong's multiple personalities."

Rey objected, "I don't think that was Treesong's problem. Vance explicitly said that those 'personalities" departed from Treesong's body and would live on after the death of Treesong. That sounds like he had several femtozoans in his body rather than just the usual one."

Marda, Zeta and Nora.
"Exactly. So Zeta had the idea that one of those migratory femtozoans that had been inside Treesong hitched a ride in the physical Book of Dreams and later slipped into the embryo that developed inside Alice Wroke. By then, Alice and Gersen were married and Alice had changed her name to Alice Gersen. All this was on her mind when Zeta planned her first publicity event for Prospeque and she started using the name Ms. Gersen for everything she did on the public side of Prospeque."

"But Zeta never wrote her story about Alice Gersen."

"She did not. She's even more stubborn than you in the face of any suggestion from me that she write science fiction. But I did eventually write The Cythyrya Investigation."

"The Cythyrya Investigation is still growing in popularity. Have you decided on the cover for the 4th edition?"

"No. Now stop distracting us from "Nyrtia's Agent'. You just need to decide on the ending of the story and then you can start writing your novel."

Tyhry and Nora by the pool.
Rey had been trying not to look out the window into the backyard where Zeta was with Marda. To get away from the temptation of the window, she told Eddy, "I can't think with you staring at me. Let's go for a walk." Rey got out of the recliner and set her laptop on the desk.

Eddy stood up from his chair and pointed through the back window to where Zeta, Marda, Tyhry and Anthony were eating by the pool. "You don't want lunch?"

Rey took Eddy by the hand and led him out the front door. "I've reached the age where I'm like you. I don't need to eat lunch. If I do then I end up wearing those calories on my fat ass."

Eddy watched Rey's bottom as she walked down the driveway and then offered his assessment. "You've never been fat."

"You just don't notice when I gain weight."

"I do notice that you are avoiding a very simple task: selecting the end of your novel. Just pick something that you would really like to have happen."

Rey pointed down the driveway. "A car."

Nora Stone by Leonardo.
The car was a big SUV which slowed and stopped when it reached them. So soon after the big rain storm, the SUV was not kicking up the usual dust clouds as it came up the gravel driveway. The driver rolled down her window and asked, "Am I getting close to Casanay?"

Eddy jerked his thumb over his shoulder. "You are getting very close... just over the rise." Eddy was peering into the back of the SUV. "Are those Marda's suitcases?"

The driver replied, "I have a four piece delivery for Marda Onway."

"If you need her signature to confirm delivery, she's out back behind the house."

"Thank you." Nora drove off towards Casanay.

Eddy and Rey continued walking down the driveway. Eddy carefully examined a stretch of the driveway that had been partially eroded during the recent storm. "I'll have to ask Anthony to fill in this eroded section of the driveway." He then started clearing sticks and other debris off of the metal screen that covered the end of the pipe that ran under the driveway at that point. While he worked, he kept badgering Rey. "For the ending of your novel, what would really like to see happen?"

Muttering under her breath, Rey quietly said, "Cute redhead." Rey had followed the car as it went up the driveway and over the rise. Now she mused, "Wouldn't it be nice to go back to the old days... back before Zeta got busy with her work and before Anthony came to Casanay?"

Eddy was done pulling debris away from the pipe opening. Eddy and Rey continued down the driveway. "Those were good times, but we are discussing ideas for the ending of your novel."

"I get the feeling that you already have your own idea for this novel."

"I do, but this is your story, not mine."

"Tell me your idea."

"Don't be lazy. You need to think."

"Don't call me lazy when I'm up to my gills wading through all the emails from your fans." Rey quoted from a recent fan email: "'Can I buy Eddy lunch?' " Then Rey continued, " 'Can Eddy come to my hotel room for the night if I buy him dinner?', 'Can Eddy slip into dressing room behind the stage with me? I'll only need fifteen minutes with him.' etc, etc."

Eddy laughed, "It's not that bad. I'm an old man. My fans don't want to crawl into bed with me, they just want fun science fiction stories to read." Eddy looked at Rey and asked, "What stage?"

"I told you last week; we're renting the auditorium at the convention center for an hour. The convention attendance this year is expected to be well over 100,000 again."

"They won't all want to listen to me prattle about my stories."

"Half the auditorium seats have already been reserved for your hour and we got a prime slot, right after the Star Trek panel discussion."

"9:00 is getting pretty late."

"Not for convention goers, old man. Remember, we are targeting younger readers."

Eddy and Rey had reached the end of the driveway. Eddy checked the mailbox, but it was empty. Rey said, "I got yesterday's mail and it is too early for today's." They started back up the driveway. Rey insisted, "Please tell me how you would end a novel about Anthony and time travel."

Eddy explained, "In my imagination, it all hinges on Mason Indrel and why he is on Earth in the first place. Manny is trying to help the bumbling Earthlings figure how to make conscious machines. Antho-, um, Mason, is in his senior year, nearing completion of his B.S. in computer science when Lassy arrives from the future. As soon as Lassy puts the femtozoan inside Mason, Nyrtia arrives and takes Lassy off of Earth and to Observer Base."

Rey suggested, "Maybe my novel can finally reveal where Observer Base is actually located."

Eddy objected, "That's one of the never-ending mysteries in the Exodemic Fictional Universe. You can't put an end to that mystery."

"See, you don't really want me to write my story. You are a control freak."

"Well, you can create your own personal fictional universe and do whatever you want."

Rey shrugged. "So you want to quickly write Lassy out of the story? That's just throwing away my favorite name for a Sci Fi heroine."

"Not at all. Think of all the interesting people Lassy meets while she is in exile at Observer Base. Then, in the end, Nyrtia realizes that the robots that Mason's company is manufacturing are so helpful for Earth that Nyrtia offers Lassy the chance to return to Earth."

"That seems very unlikely. Lassy blatantly violated the Rules of Intervention."

"Not at all. Nobody on Earth is aware that the bumpha sped up the rate of development of robotics."

"So Lassy returns to Earth and takes up knitting?"

"What would you do if you were Lassy and you suddenly were given a second chance at life on Earth?"

"That depends. Is she poor and unemployed?"

"With millions of conscious humanoid robots coming off of the assembly line, it is the dawn of a new post-scarcity world where the robots do all of the dirty work and the annoying jobs. This is where you have to use your imagination. What would you do if you never had to work?"

"That's very hard to imagine, since I don't feel like I actually ever worked a day in my life. Until today, life at Casanay has been idyllic."

"What happened today?

"You said it earlier. Something has changed."

Eddy stopped walking and looked at Rey. "You feel it too?"

Zeta
"I felt it when I saw Zeta and Tyhry with Marda. I did not even get a hug or a pat on the bottom from Zeta upon her return. Now both Zeta and Tyhry only have eyes for pretty little Marda." Eddy and Rey continued walking.

"Marda is a cutie, but hardly little. She's as tall as Tyhry."

"I suppose you are also bewitched by Marda's perky breasts. In comparison, you must view me as an old frump who you can order to write your novels for you so that you can have time to explore the young blood of Casanay. Speaking of which, what happened to that cute redheaded driver we sent up to the house?"

Eddy and Rey were approaching Casanay and the car and the drive were nowhere to be seen. Eddy and Rey entered Casanay through the front door and found Anthony in the kitchen placing dishes in the dish washing machine. He said, "I have leftover sandwiches if either of you is hungry."

Eddy asked Anthony, "You are feeling fine after your ordeal?"

"Yes, sir. Don't worry about me."

"Did you notice the low spot in the driveway that had some erosion during the storm?"

"Yes, I did. I'll smooth that over as soon as I get the dishwasher running. Anthony asked Rey, "Why didn't you run the washer last night?"

"With only Tyhry and I in the house, there were not that many dishes."

"But now with the arrival of Marda and Nora, we'll have many more dishes and so I have to run a load during the day." Anthony turned on the washer.

Eddy asked, "Where are Marda and Nora?"

Marda and Nora
Anthony shrugged and replied, "I saw Tyhry and Marda heading down to the basement." Anthony went to the garage to get the jumping jack rammer that was used to keep the driveway in good repair.

Rey told Eddy, "I'm going to get back to answering emails. Thank you for going with me on that walk."

"Think about the ending of your story." Eddy went down the stairway to Tyhry's workshop. Tyhry was showing Marda how to program the nanoforge, which had a user interface with similarities to the robotic confocal microscopy system that Marda used to count and catalogue synapses in brain organoids.

Tyhry and Marda were sitting close together, their legs pressed together. Tyhry looked up and asked, "Where did you go, dad? You missed lunch."

"Rey and I walked down to the highway and looked at the storm damage to the driveway. What happened to that delivery woman?"

Marda explained, "Nora brought my suitcases." She pointed down the hallway to where all five of the suitcases Zeta had bought for Marda were now stacked outside the guest bedroom. "I suppose I should unpack."

Eddy asked, "Nora?"

Tyhry explained, "Nora Stone, mom's new hire. She'll be doing accounting for Virunculus and Prospeque and is already helping deal with Manikoid so that we have a smooth start modifying the M2." Tyhry pointed at the M2 robot that was again shut off and standing in a corner of the room.

"The accountant brought out Marda's suitcases?"

Eddy, Zeta and Nora by Gemini.
Tyhry said, "Yes," and then resumed explaining the nanoforge to Marda.

Feeling like he had been rather bluntly dismissed by his daughter, Eddy went back up the stairs and now saw that Zeta was out back in the hot tub with Nora. He went out back on the patio, still puzzled by the mystery of why Nora had ended up with Marda's suitcases. Zeta invited Eddy into the hot tub, but he found it difficult to think in the presence of the cute redheaded Nora, who was seated side-by-side with Zeta. After being introduced to Nora, and with four nipples pointed at him, Eddy asked Zeta, "Can Rey offload her finance-related work onto Nora?"

Zeta nodded. "I'm going to keep asking Nora to perform any duty that pops into my head... until we reach the point where she says 'no'. So far, I've found no evidence that Nora can say 'no'."

Zeta and Rey in the tub by Leonardo.
Nora quipped, "I'll cheerfully tackle any task. I'd hate to get a negative employee evaluation. Maybe I'll start a petition to change the name of this place to 'Casayay'."

Eddy noticed that the storage cabinet by the hot tub was open. Eddy suspected that Nora and Zeta were each holding one of Zeta's vibrating toys down under the bubbling water of the hot tub. Eddy was quite aroused by the site of Nora there beside Zeta. "I don't want to interrupt a new employee training session." Eddy reluctantly took his eyes off of Nora's cute breasts, turned and walked back into the house, seemingly followed by the sound of Nora and Zeta giggling.

Eddy returned to his computer workstation and pretended to be reading the text of the story he was working on, but he was marveling at how quickly Zeta had gotten Nora into the hot tub. Rey said, "Zeta is not wasting any time."

Eddy turned in his chair and looked at Rey. He asked, "When does the convention start this week?"

Nora with a sensible body
when not showing off for Zeta.
Rey explained the convention schedule. "Today is the first day of the fandom convention. We have the auditorium for one hour on Thursday."

"Can we still get a table on the convention hall floor?"

"Last I saw, there were still some small tables available in a back corner." Rey used her phone to check. "Yes, some are still available."

"Book one for us." Eddy popped out of his chair. "Let's go, we'll spend the whole week at the convention." As soon as Rey had reserved a table, Eddy tugged Rey out of the big recliner. "Get packed." Eddy stepped out on the back patio and told Zeta, "We're going to town for the convention."

"Have fun." Zeta told Eddy, "Take the new car." Eddy could not figure out where Nora was. Maybe she had needed to use the bathroom. Then he saw Nora come back up above the surface of the water. Not wanting to interrupt whatever Nora and Zeta were so intently engaged in, Eddy turned and went to the garage. The car that Nora had driven to Casanay was there, where the old SUV had parked before its destruction in the landslide. Eddy grabbed his travel bag, picked up a key for the new car off the shelf in the hallway and five minutes later he and Rey were headed down the driveway in the new car.

Anthony had the driveway blocked with the old pickup truck, a load of pea gravel and the jack rabbit. Anthony moved the equipment far enough off the drive way so that Eddy could get the SUV past. After turning onto the highway, Eddy said, "About your novel. Pretend you are Lassy." He asked Rey, "If you were taken away from Casanay, what would you do."

"That's a scary concept. I've always been so happy at Casanay... until now. Just an hour after arriving at Casanay, Nora is playing with Zeta in the hot tub!" Eddy glanced at Rey and was amused by the way she was pouting. "I know I should not be jealous of Nora. If I'm being honest, I have to admit she's a knock-out. I would not mind a play session with her in the hot tub, myself."

"I can take you back." Eddy slowed down the car.

"Don't tease me Eddy. I'll try to control my jealousy. Does it perturb you that your wife can make me feel jealous?"

"I wish you would stop changing the subject, imagine that you could never return to Casanay. What would you do?"

"Well, you are forcing me to think back to my school days to remember if I ever had plans for the future. Do you remember what I wrote for my job application?"

"No." Eddy again took his eyes off of the road and glanced at Rey. "What job application? I thought Zeta just saw you one day and invited you to work for us."

"Zeta hired me to work for you. I had to write an essay on the topic of 'How to satisfy your boss'?

Eddy chuckled. "Very funny."

"I'm serious. Didn't you read my application and that essay?"

"I had no idea there was an application process. I assumed that Zeta simply liked you and hired you."

"Oh, she liked me well enough. She had me in her bed on my third day at Casanay. At first I thought I was supposed to hide our play sessions from you, but then Zeta told me that you did not mind. I still find that hard to believe. For years I thought you hated me."

"That makes no sense."

"You were so formal."

"I'm just not a good boss."

"Anyhow, everything worked out. You are a great boss. It has been a fun adventure for me helping to build up and provide entertainment for your fan base. If you fired me, I'd probably seek a similar job, but somehow you got me thinking about that essay. I wrote about my love of physics and how that interest of mine would be an asset for any science fiction story teller."

Eddy laughed loudly. "It must have been a shock for you to find out that you were working for the biology king of science fiction."

Rey shrugged. "Well, it did not matter. I never really knew any physics. Had I gone to college I might have majored in physics. I was pleased to find that you are one of the rare biologists who likes mathematics."

"We have a lot in common and that has made us a good team for going on three decades now."

"I suppose I got lucky. I imagined growing up as a physicist who would discover how to construct a commercially viable fusion energy power plant. Now we seem no closer to fusion power now than back when I graduated from high school."

Rey
Eddy reached out and took hold of Rey's hand. "So that's the ending of your novel? Lassy provides fusion power to the primitive Earthlings of the far past?"

"It is a lame ending. You've already written a story about solving global warming by time travelers speeding up the development of fusion energy."

They had reached the wider highway and Eddy activated the assist-drive feature of the car which required him to keep both hands on the steering wheel as the car drove itself. He let go of Rey's hand and gave his full attention to the idea of ending 'Nyrtia's Agent' with the development of fusion power technology. "Asimov wrote about micro-fusion, maybe you could go to the next level... nano-fusion."

Rey asked, "What does that mean?"

"Maybe there are hierions that can not only link together atoms but pull them together... forcing fusion to occur, even at room temperature."

"That's silly."

"For your story, you don't need to provide any details. Just sketch a fictional science framework and let the reader complete the picture in their mind."

"Well, I'll have to do some research. I don't know the first thing about fusion power generation."

"That's fine. Research is important for science fiction story writing."

For over an hour Rey used her phone to investigate fusion. Eddy found it easy to take his eyes off the road. The new vehicle's self-drive features seemed quite competent for open highway driving. Eddy enjoyed watching Rey indulge her curiosity about a physics topic for the first time in her adult life. She seemed to have disappeared into her phone as she researched topics for her novel. The more Eddy thought about nano-fusion, the happier he became at the prospect of that being the core fictional science in 'Nyrtia's Agent'"

When they got into traffic as they approached the convention center, Eddy turned off the self-drive features of the car. Rey turned off her phone and said, "'Nyrtia's Agent' by Sha-" She looked at Eddy. "What was the dead girl's name in Vance's first Alastor Cluster novel?"

"Sharue."

"I'll use that as my pseudonym. 'Nyrtia's Agent' by Sharue."

"A mononym? Oh my, I've created a monster."

"You should always be careful what you ask for." An hour later they were at a small table in the big convention exhibit hall. Eddy was chatting with fans and signing copies of his books. Occasionally Rey sold a book to a fan, but mostly she was busy writing. By the time Eddy started talking about getting dinner, Rey was already working on Chapter 2.
