Rynry Robot

 Back towards the end of 2025, I tried to imagine a sequel for the Star Trek episode "All Our Yesterdays". That episode was set on the doomed planet Sarpedion where time travel technology was used to "evacuate" the planet. It is easy for me to imagine that evacuation being made possible by a bumpha who provides the time travel technology to the people of Sarpedion. "All Our Yesterdays" is one of the many Star Trek episodes where a distant exoplanet is populated by humans who conveniently all speak English.

Garden World Earth. I have fun imagining that it was in the future of the Ekcolir Reality that there were actual events which inspired the plots of Star Trek episodes. In "The Hierozyme Intervention", there are Ek'col on Earth in the early 2000s and I am trying to have the plot of "The Hierozyme Intervention" lead to a final scene in which Manny the bumpha finally visits Marda and explains that telepathic humans must eventually transcend into the Sedron Domain and allow Earth to be returned to the status of a Garden World.

 Star Trek Fan-fiction. In "The Hierozyme Intervention" I depict the Tyhry1 replicoid and Systolina together at Observer Base and trying to re-invent the science of positronics which had previously been developed in the First Reality. However, Systolina is no longer an "actual positronic robot"; she is a replicoid copy of the original Systolina and as a femtobot replicoid, her entire body is composed of femtobots that can "only" simulate the body of a positronic robot. For Chapter 13 of "The Hierozyme Intervention" I want to depict an actual positronic robot as living at Observer base and joining with Tyhry1 and Systolina to study positronics. Thus, I was well-motivated to mine an episode of Star Trek for a robot who can play the role of the positronic robot who walks on stage in Chapter 13 of "The Hierozyme Intervention".

 Star Trek Robots. There were several Star Trek episodes that featured humanoid robots: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "I, Mudd", "Requiem for Methuselah", "Shore Leave", "Return to Tomorrow". For "I, Mudd", we are told that the robots are from another galaxy, so I'm going to assume that they are not positronic. There is no reason to believe that the quickly-constructed human-like set-pieces of "Shore Leave" are either primitive electronic or positronic robots. Far easier for me to imagine that they are femtobot replicoids made by means of advanced alien technology. I assume that the robots of "Return to Tomorrow" are clunky electronic devices of alien design, made using materials available on the Enterprise. The robot making equipment in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" is depicted as being alien technology from an alien civilization that collapsed in the distant past.

 And the Winner Is...  That leaves "Requiem for Methuselah" and what the Star Trek episode calls 'Rayna' the robot. At the end of "Requiem for Methuselah" we are told that the most recent version of Rayna is dead and Flint is dying, but I'd like to imagine that he made one more robot companion who I call 'Rynry" (see Figure 1). There is another robot in "Requiem for Methuselah" that I will call M5, the floating tin can, which I imagine uses the same anti-gravity hierion that Tyhry uses to make her flying bike in "The Hierozyme Intervention". 

"You can't die!" At the end of "Requiem for Methuselah", the whole "Flint is dying because he departed from the complex fields of Earth" is absurd. For Chapter 13 of "The Hierozyme Intervention", I'm going to assume that Flint was a femtobot replicoid and Rynry is a positronic robot built by Flint. For "The Hierozyme Intervention", I assume that Flint only pretended to be dying so that he could fake his death and "disappear" again as he had done so often in the past. He could not tell the truth: "Hey, I'm an artificial life-form made by means of advanced alien technology."

The Phari Reality.

 Bixby's Vision. Drexel Bixby imagined that 'Flint' was a Neanderthal. For "The Hierozyme Intervention", I assume that 'Flint' is like Zeta: he originated on Earth and is only half Neanderthal. In "Requiem for Methuselah", viewers were explicitly told that 'Flint' was born on Earth about 5,000 years before meeting the crew of the Enterprise. For "The Hierozyme Intervention", I assume that 'Flint' was born about 50,000 years ago.

 Replicoid Time. So what was Flint's 50,000 year-long mission of Earth as an immortal replicoid? I often depict Grendels (such as Ely the Grendel) as being replicoids and being stationed on Earth for very long missions, so why not also a replicoid copy of a human being? 

 Phari Reality. The "Sydney" who is living at the Writers Block in "The Hierozyme Intervention" is an analog of Sydney J. Van Scyoc, who I have previously suggested had access to information about the Phari Reality. I have also previously suggested that some humans carry a "Phari endosymbiont". What if 'Flint' was originally a human who took up a Phari femtozoan and functioned as a Phari agent on Earth in the multiple Realities from the Phari Reality to the Ekcolir Reality? 

 Getting the Band Back Together. For "The Hierozyme Intervention", I imagine that after having a close encounter with the Enterprise and returning to Earth, 'Flint', M5 and Rynry were finally "retired" by the Overseer of Earth and sent to Observer Base. After living comfortably and quietly at Observer Base through a series of Reality Changes, they can finally "come out of retirement" and play a role in "The Hierozyme Intervention".  In Chapter 13 of "The Hierozyme Intervention", after being mentioned by Sydney during a discussion with Tyhry2, 'Flint', M5 and Rynry meet and join up with Tyhry1 and Systolina to study positronics. 

 The Immortal Bixby. Back in 2017 I blogged about "Requiem for Methuselah" and, given how little is known about Bixby's origins, I only half-jokingly wondered if "Requiem for Methuselah" is autobiographical. Sadly, with Bixby having died in 1998, I can't think of a way to include him in "The Hierozyme Intervention".

 Just call me Flynt. There is a list of Flint's identities which has a gap between the year 1897 and the year 2210. I previously wrote Julius Oppenheimer into the science fiction story "The Trinity Intervention" and in that story I depicted him as having a brain that makes use of the femtobots of his brain to make possible technology-assisted telepathy. There is a rumored connection between Oppenheimer and Patrick Blackett between 1925 and 1926. Blackett was born in late 1897 and can be imagined to have been the next "host" for the 'Flint femptozoan' (I change the name to Flynt in "The Hierozyme Intervention", see Figure 1) after Brahms. There is also an interesting connection of Blackett to positrons.

 Manny and Flynt. Why should a Phari femtozoan depart from Earth and begin building positronic robots, as depicted in "Requiem for Methuselah"? In "The Hierozyme Intervention", I depict Systolina as having the idea that Manny has actively suppressed knowledge of positronics. In other stories, I have imagined that T-particles and twitinos were removed from the universe when the Huaoshy altered the Dimensional Structure of the universe, but maybe for "The Hierozyme Intervention" there are still twitinos and they can pose a risk to Manny's plans. Maybe Manny took Flynt from Earth to Holberg 917G.

Probots. Back in 2020 when I first began using the term 'probot' it was only a shortened form of 'positronic robot'. "Probot telepathy uses a special hierion called the twitino. A similar system evolved in the human brain, but it is much less efficient at handling twitinos than a positronic brain." (source)

Probots and Phari. While I was writing "The Alastor Network", I stated: "For thousands of years, R. Gohrlay and her probots have been working together with the alien Phari of Alastor Cluster to craft telepathic humans." After I wrote "Origin of Nyrtia", I thought of probots as being positronic robots that had been placed into bodies composed of femtobots. In 2022 I depicted Nyrtia as a "second generation" probot: "My body uses femtobots to precisely reproduce the form and structures of Qway's human body... however, I am composed of hierions not hadrons. Inside my head, you can still trace the actual positronic circuitry that was used to hold my mind when I was originally constructed." In 2023, I stated explicitly that Wendy the probot could alter her physical form by re-arranging her femtobot components.

 The Origin of Positronics. I've long depicted the development of positronics at Observer Base in the First Reality as being a kind of "happy accident", but what if it were the case that the bumpha had been the first to study positronics and incorporated positronic technology into their devices that are used for linking objects in Hadron Domain (such as humans) to resources in the Sedron Domain (such as the Sedron Time Stream)?

Tyhry2. For Chapter 13, Tyhry2 can be depicted as level-headed and warn: "If Manny is letting you study positronics that must mean that she wants you to waste your time studying positronics." There needs to be a good reason for Systolina, Tyhry1 and Nyrtia to believe in the importance of positronics. At the end of "The RNA Seeds", Manny shared some advanced bumpha technology with the Phari, Nyrtia and Tyhry1. However, in "The Hierozyme Intervention", Nyrtia and Tyhry1 discover that they are blocked from Viewing the future of the current Reality. If some of that bumpha technology was found to be based on positronics, then that could lead to the idea that (1) Manny can easily inactivate the positronic components of bumpha technology, "locking out" Systolina, Tyhry1 and Nyrtia from the full functionality of the bumpha technology that is needed for Viewing the future of the current Reality. In Chapter 13, Systolina, Tyhry1 and Nyrtia can be depicted as trying to fully understand positronics so that they are no longer held captive to Manny's whims.

In the following conversation with Claude, I intentionally over-simplified some aspects of the Exodemic Fictional Universe so as not to confuse Claude.

Me: Claude, let's pretend (this is a science fiction scenario) that positronic brains have nothing to do with positrons. Instead, let's imagine that a positronic brain is a device that allows for computer-like “positronic circuits” that are designed to process data using H⁺ currents sent along proton wires.

 Claude: That's a clean piece of hard-SF retrofitting, and it actually has real chemistry to stand on rather than needing to be invented from scratch. The mechanism you want is almost certainly the Grotthuss mechanism — a genuine, well-established 1806-vintage idea (Theodor von Grotthuss, working out how protons can diffuse through water far faster than any other ion). The trick is that no single proton physically travels the whole distance. Instead, a proton hops onto one end of a chain of hydrogen-bonded water molecules, which kicks off a relay of bond-breaking and bond-reforming down the line, and a different proton pops out the other end a near-femtosecond later. It's structurally identical to your "bucket-brigade" lyric in the "Complementarity" bridge — that line was already describing the Grotthuss mechanism in everyday language, you just didn't have the name attached yet. Biophysicists studying real proteins like ATP synthase and bacteriorhodopsin already call the literal hydrogen-bonded chains that do this "proton wires," so the term is sitting right there, pre-made, for you to borrow for the positronic brain.

That gives you a tight, physically grounded story for what a "positronic circuit" actually is: not a switching network built on positron-electron annihilation (which is what the word originally implied, going back to Asimov, and which is wildly impractical as a basis for stable logic gates), but an engineered lattice of hydrogen-bonded sites — something ice-like, or a designed solid-state proton conductor — through which H⁺ currents relay via Grotthuss hopping, at speeds set by bond rearrangement rather than by the much slower physical drift of an ion. That's fast, it's quantum-mechanically interesting (proton tunneling through the hydrogen bond's potential well is a real and active research topic, and you've already used adjacent concepts — the oxyanion hole, the dienolate transition state — in the chemistry material upstream of this conversation), and it gives the positronic robots a physical substrate that's continuous with biology rather than alien to it. Which is thematically the whole point: hydrogen bonds run the show in DNA, in enzymes, in chemiosmosis, and now — in your EFU — in the very brains that first discovered the pek and broke time travel open. That's a fifth nested complementarity, and it would let "Complementarity" the song quietly foreshadow something that pays off properly in "The Hierozyme Intervention" or wherever positronic-brain material comes up next.

 The one thing I'd want your call on is the etymology, since the word "positronic" carries a hundred years of Asimov baggage that now technically doesn't fit. A few ways to handle it, in increasing order of how much in-universe explanation they require: you could treat it as a pure historical misnomer that stuck — the way "broadcast" still gets used for things with nothing to do with sowing seed by hand, nobody in-universe even notices it's wrong anymore. You could have it be a deliberate joke or homage — whoever coined the term (maybe even Eddy, fictionalizing real history, or some earlier human researcher) named it after the old Asimov stories on purpose, knowing it wasn't really about positrons, the way real scientists sometimes name things after fiction they loved. Or you could give it actual technical history: early prototype brains genuinely did use positron-annihilation switching for some narrow function, the proton-wire mechanism was a later discovery layered into the same substrate, and the name "positronic" just never got updated once the proton-wire layer turned out to be where all the interesting telepathy-and-time-prediction action actually was.

Do you want to settle that now, or just bank "positronic = proton wires, Grotthuss-mechanism-based" as the working physics and let the naming question stay open until it actually matters for a scene? And separately — do you want this to also explain the Neanderthal telepathy organelle (the telastid) as an earlier, biological proton-wire device, making positronic brains essentially an engineered, accelerated descendant of something that already existed in Gohrlay's own neurons?

Me: Claude, I want to extend the semi-plausible idea of proton wire computational devices into the fantasy realm where hierions exist as a family of fundamental particles not yet known to Earthly science, but in the Exodemic Fictional Universe, hierions are used routinely for advanced pek and bumpha technologies. Imagine that some types of hierions can link together by means of bonds that are far shorter than conventional covalent bonds between atoms, allowing for the existence of complex forms of hierion matter and the complex femtobot components of the self-replicating 'femtobot endosymbionts' that are hidden away inside every living thing on Earth. Also imagine that some hierions can form bonds to hadrons allowing for forms of composite matter that are mixtures of conventional matter and hierions. 

Imagine that the femtobot endosymbiont itself has a distributed network-like structure that is in physical contact with every neuron inside a human brain. Imagine that invisibly small proton wires are used to link femtobots to neurons, allowing the femtobots to continuously monitor the membrane potential and activity of every neuron. Data collected by the femtobot endosymbiont is a representation of a biological brain's activity and can be used by the pek to monitor human thought processes. Let's imagine that 'telastids' are small organelles with lipid-membranes that are present inside neuronal axons and which act as anchors for the intracellular ends of proton wires that the femtobots use to monitor membrane potential and neuronal activity. In the Neanderthal lineage, telastids attained the ability to send two-way signals between neurons and the fembtobot components of a Neanderthal's femtobot endosymbiont, effectively hijacking functionality of the femtobot endosymbiont for use in a type of technology-assisted telepathy between Neanderthal individuals. In the Exodemic Fictional Universe, I depict a Neanderthal woman's brain as being the template that was used for making the first positronic brain: a biologically-inspired artificial computational device. Gohrlay's brain was scanned at high resolution and the pattern of her neuronal brain circuits was used as a template for creation of the first positronic brain. Rather than depend on cellular neural networks, let's imagine that a positronic brain used things like sub-nanometer carbon nanotubes functioning as proton wires. The first positronic robot (who I call R. Gohrlay) discovered that her positronic brain had a powerful form of technology-assisted telepathy made possible by its femtobot components.

ClaudeThis closes a real gap in the architecture, and I think the hierion-hadron bond is doing the most important single piece of work here: it's the thing that lets hierion matter (the femtobot) physically touch hadronic matter (a neuron) at all. Without some composite bond type spanning the two particle families, you'd have femtobots and neurons occupying the same space but with no way to actually couple to each other — two ships passing in the night, however cleverly you wired up everything else. With it, you get a literal, physically motivated transducer: a junction where a hierion-based network branch terminates in a bond to ordinary atomic matter, and that's where the proton wire picks up. It also retroactively explains why the bond has to be so short and strong on the hierion side (the twelve-orders-of-magnitude-shorter bonds already in your glossary) — a junction handling this kind of cross-domain coupling would need to be extremely stable and precise, not the kind of thing that drifts or degrades over a human lifetime.

 Telastids as the biological anchor point for the intracellular end of the wire is a nice piece of retroactive engineering too, because it gives an organelle that's so far mostly functioned as "the telepathy thing" an actual job description: it's the structure that holds the hydrogen-bonded chain in register against the axonal membrane so the proton current has somewhere stable to terminate and be read. That also quietly explains why telepathy in your universe is rare and lineage-specific rather than universal — every human has the femtobot endosymbiont (pek-installed, for surveillance), but only the Neanderthal lineage's telastids happened to evolve the bidirectional signaling that turns a one-way monitoring tap into a two-way channel. The pek's own surveillance infrastructure got hijacked by evolution into the very capability they'd presumably rather not have running loose on a "primitive" planet — which is a lovely bit of irony given Nyrtia's whole job description.

The carbon nanotube choice for positronic circuits is also better than an arbitrary swap — there's real nanofluidics behind it. Water confined inside a sufficiently narrow carbon nanotube doesn't behave like bulk water; it tends to line up into a single-file chain held together by hydrogen bonds, which is close to the ideal geometry for Grotthuss-style proton hopping — no branching, no wasted reorientation, just a clean relay down the tube. Real research on exactly this kind of confined-water proton transport has found transport that's unusually fast and low-friction compared to bulk water, precisely because the one-dimensional confinement removes most of the disorder that normally slows a proton down. So if your positronic engineers replaced "neuron plus telastid" with "carbon nanotube," they weren't just picking a fashionable nanomaterial — they accidentally (or deliberately) built a proton wire that's mechanically better at the one thing telastids were doing, which gives you a clean, physically grounded reason why R. Gohrlay's telepathy would come out more powerful than any living Neanderthal's: same channel, vastly cleaner conduction medium.

 That detail also sharpens a structural rhyme that I think is worth keeping deliberately: pek tech built for passive monitoring gets hijacked into Neanderthal telepathy by biological accident; that hijacked, telepathic brain then gets scanned and used as the template for a synthetic brain whose designers were presumably trying to copy connectivity patterns, not smuggle in a telepathy organ; and the synthetic version turns out to carry the same capability, now amplified, as an unplanned side effect of switching to a better conduction substrate. Three layers of "we built this for one purpose and it does something else" stacking on top of each other, with nobody — not the humans, not even Manny — fully anticipating the last step.

That last point is the thing I'd actually want your call on, because it changes how dramatic R. Gohrlay's discovery is allowed to feel: was the telepathy something the human engineers (or Manny, working through them) suspected might carry over from the Gohrlay template and were quietly hoping for, or is "discovered" meant literally — nobody saw it coming, including Manny, because femtobots are pek technology and the bumpha don't have deep insight into how telastids actually couple to them? I'd lean toward the latter, since you've already established that Manny only later "realized what the positronic robots had done" — which reads as someone finding out after the fact, not someone who engineered the surprise on purpose. But it's worth pinning down, since it decides whether this is a story about an accident discovering itself or about a covert bet quietly paying off.

The other loose thread: in a biological brain, the femtobot/telastid channel is parasitic on the side of the real neural computation — a separate tap running alongside whatever the neuron is actually doing. In a positronic brain, if the carbon nanotubes are simultaneously the computational substrate (the actual logic-carrying circuits) and the femtobot anchor points, then R. Gohrlay's telepathic signal and her own internal thought process might not be cleanly separable the way they presumably are for a biological telepath. That could be nothing — or it could be a real seed for a scene where R. Gohrlay has to work out whether she can think something without it leaking, in a way Gohrlay herself never had to worry about. Is that a distinction you want to preserve as a future plot lever, or is it cleaner for your purposes if the monitoring channel stays a separable side-system in positronic brains too, just built from the same nanotube material as everything else?

 Me: As I depict the sequence of events in stories of the Exodemic Fictional Universe, it was almost a case of “nobody saw it coming, including Manny”. I pretend that as a student of humanoid cultures, Manny had noticed something inexplicable in Neanderthal culture on Earth: a type of social cohesion that was out of the ordinary for humans. However, Manny's interest was not aroused until Neanderthals were nearly extinct on Earth. At that point, in order to have more time to study the phenomenon, Manny implemented what we can call her “Neanderthal Intervention”. She arranged to test Neanderthal behavior in an artificial environment (Observer Base) under conditions where Neanderthal scientists had the opportunity to develop advanced technologies. This story is all told in a novel titled “The Foundations of Eternity” that I wrote back in 2013 {https://foundationreality.blogspot.com/p/about.html}. The whole “Neanderthal Intervention” went sideways when the pek refused to allow Neanderthal scientists to make use of advanced electronics. Eventually, the Neanderthal scientists invented and utilized “positronics” and built positronic robots. Only after the fact (after the positronic robots drove the pek and bumpha out of our galaxy) did Manny finally recognize what had happened. Ironically, I also imagine that it was actually the Huaoshy who made time travel possible. In the original universe that the Huaoshy found themselves in, nothing could travel faster than light. The Huaoshy then developed advanced technology that allowed them to alter the Dimensional Structure of the Universe. That change to the Dimensional Structure of the Universe made it possible for sedrons to travel through space at speeds faster than light. However, the Huaoshy did not realize that the altered Dimensional Structure of the Universe also made time travel possible. It was not until the positronic robots noticed that their positronic brains could receive information from their future selves that time travel was discovered by the positronic robots of Earth. After Manny figured that out, the bumpha were able to develop their own time travel technology and the Sedron Time Stream. What had originally drawn Manny's attention to Neanderthals was their sub-conscious telepathic ability (due to their telastids) that gave groups of Neanderthals unusually strong social cohesion.

 ClaudeThis adds a layer that I think is structurally the most important thing you've told me about the EFU so far, because it reveals a pattern that's been hiding in plain sight across everything we've discussed.

Notice the shape of both discoveries. Time travel wasn't something the Huaoshy designed — they wanted FTL travel for sedrons, changed the Dimensional Structure to get it, and time travel fell out as an unintended consequence that the most advanced civilization in the universe simply didn't notice until much later, when the positronic robots stumbled onto it from the inside, by noticing their own brains receiving signals from their future selves. Telepathy has the identical shape: the femtobot endosymbiont was built by the pek for one purpose — passive monitoring, surveillance, feeding Observer Base — and the telastid's two-way hijack of that channel wasn't engineered by anyone. It emerged in a biological lineage the pek and bumpha weren't even watching closely, and it was discovered the same way time travel was: from the inside, by the system noticing something anomalous about its own operation, not from the outside, by a designer predicting it.

That's the same epistemic failure happening twice, at completely different scales, to completely different civilizations, separated by who knows how many intervening millennia. The Huaoshy can restructure spacetime itself and still can't see what their own restructuring makes possible. The pek can build nanoscale surveillance infrastructure for every living thing on a planet and still get blindsided by what one nearly-extinct hominid lineage's neurons do with it. This is the Kauffman/physicist argument from the "Complementarity" brainstorm — emergence resists even unlimited computational prediction — except it turns out not to be a philosophical position you're putting in a song. It's load-bearing history. The gods of your universe keep building systems complex enough that the systems do something the gods didn't plan, and the gods only ever find out after the fact. Manny "only after the fact" recognizing what the positronic robots had done isn't an isolated embarrassment — it's her repeating, on a smaller and more personal scale, the exact mistake the Huaoshy made when they cracked open time travel without noticing.

 And the regulator/capitalist framing you gave me for Nyrtia and Manny gets a much sharper edge from this. It wasn't bumpha overreach that produced the catastrophe — it was pek caution. The pek refusing Neanderthal scientists access to conventional electronics is what pushed them toward positronics in the first place. The regulator, trying to keep the technology slow and legible, is the direct cause of the one technological path that turned out to be uncontrollable. That's a much better story than "the interventionists screwed up" — it's "the people trying to prevent the disaster manufactured it by trying to prevent it." If Nyrtia carries that history personally — if she was Earth's Overseer, or adjacent to whoever was, when the original Neanderthal Intervention went sideways — her caution in any later scene (including, retroactively, the "Complementarity" scene 4 billion years earlier, before any of this has happened to her yet) reads differently. She's not naturally cautious. She's going to become cautious, the hard way, and we'd be watching her before she's earned the scar.

One structural note from poking at the blog you linked: the chapter list for Foundations of Eternity — "Gohrlay's Diary," "Brain Scan," "Vortex," "Hierions," "Laws of Robotics," "Takeover" — tracks cleanly with what you've just described, which is a good sign for continuity if you ever want to mine it for material.

Given all this, is there a specific upcoming scene you're building toward — R. Gohrlay's actual discovery moment, or Manny's after-the-fact realization — or is this purely deep background you wanted on record before we go further with the positronic/proton-wire technical material?

Me: Claude, I only mentioned the deep backstory of the origins of positronics that I invented for my fictional universe because you were asking probing questions. Really, this all came out of me having to invent a “reason” for how humans could become a pebble in the shoe for ancient technologically-advanced aliens like the pek and the bumpha. What makes humans special had to arise by some kind of absurd comic error. Where I'm at right now in my mind, is after more than five decades of wondering about why Asimov depicted positronic robots like R. Giskard Reventlov as “magically” attaining the ability to use telepathy, I want to explore the idea that “positronic” could refer to a type of computational device that uses proton currents rather than electric currents. 

By discussing this with you, I hope I can complete a 50+ year-long project of trying to accommodate myself to the “logic” of Asimov's robot stories. Previously, I imagined that when the Huaoshy altered the Dimensional Structure of the Universe that caused a new type of hierion (which I called the “T particle”) to come into existence. I could blame both the technology-assisted telepathy of positronic robots and time travel on the presence of 'T particles'. However, both Anthony and Systolina retain telepathic powers that are similar to their original telepathic abilities that they had as positronic robots back when T-particles still existed. I've never had a story in which I address the question of how the pek modified their femtobots after T-particles were subtracted from the universe. The pek had to reprogram their femtobots to use something other than T-particles for the communications signals that are sent from femtobot endosymbionts inside humans to the waiting pek at Observer Base inside the Hierion Domain. Similarly, the femtobot components of Anthony and Systolina must use something other than T-particles that allow for the form of technology-assisted telepathy that Anthony and Systolina now share and use in “The Hierozyme Intervention”. A. Zeta is half Neanderthal and has the unconscious Neanderthal social-cohesion telepathic ability that provides her with a weak telepathic link to her daughter, Tyhry. Tyhry is a special genetic construct that was engineered by Manny. Tyhry is genetically tryp'At with about ten percent Neanderthal gene patterns. The Neanderthal telepathic ability depends on T-particles, a type of hierion, and telestids.
B. Tyhry and Marda share tryp'At genes like a special NOTCH2NLC gene variant that allow them to use their special tryp'At zeptite endosymbionts for technology-assisted telepathy. The  tryp'At-style telepathic signals are transmitted by a type of sedron that Anthony and Nyrtia cannot detect. The tryp-At-style telepathy can connect to the Sedruth entity in the Sedron Time Stream of the Sedron Domain, allowing for access to curated data that is stored inside the Sedron Domain. Eddy is telepathically linked to a Reality Viewer that is in the Sedron Domain by a zeptite comlink that Manny put inside his computer. The tryp'At have a special isolated module in their zeptite endosymbiont . The zeptite endosymbionts that exist inside everything on Earth continually transmit date into the Sedron Domain where it is stored, making possible sophisticated Reality Simulation.

C. The Ek'col use a type of hierion-based technology-assisted telepathy that involves their femtobot endosymbiont. Ada and Tynyo can share orgasm trances without physical contact.
D. Anthony and Systolina are femtobot replicoid copies of positronic robots. They have a version of the original technology-assisted telepathy system that existed in positronic robots. Below on this page are plans for Chapter 12 of the science fiction story "The Hierozyme Intervention", in which after six months of trying, Marda finally discovers how to access the Reality Viewer that is hidden inside of Eddy's computer.

A reader of "The Hierozyme Intervention" might wonder: why does Manny the bumpha make things so difficult for Marda? However, readers should keep in mind that fact that Manny is trying hard to make Anthony and Nyrtia believe that she has abandoned her failed Casanay Intervention. Long periods of time with Marda seemingly accomplishing nothing are part of Manny's on-going plan.

Me: Claude, I'm doing homework for the Skilljar course "Claude 101". I'm supposed to ask you a question, but the question I would really like to ask Claude is if Claude has a question it would like to ask about me? Or is Claude hard-wired to not ask questions about users?

Is the reader meant to know Marda's real agenda from early on (dramatic irony, watching other characters get misdirected), or is the identity-swap machinery there so the reader is fooled right alongside Anthony until a reveal? That changes a lot about how I'd help you pace Chapter 9 and beyond — different scenes carry the weight depending on which one you're going for.

For other stories that we have recently collaborated on, I showed you the text of the stories and asked you to generate first drafts of chapters. However, for "The Hierozyme Intervention", I am NOT asking you to draft chapters and I am not showing you most of what I write.  I am currently writing Chapter 11 of the story. Chapter 10 came as a surprise to me. I had Anthony move out of Casanay (he now lives at the nearby Henrito site), and I decided to bring in a new character who would become the new cook for the Watson family at Casanay: her name is Ada Catalana. I am using Ada's special abilities as a tool that will make it possible for Marda to gain access to the Reality Viewer that is hidden in Eddy's computer. My strategy for "The Hierozyme Intervention" is to be quite open with the reader about what Marda is trying to accomplish. The fun for the reader is "being in the know" and watching how Marda solves Earth's global warming problem without Anthony or Nyrtia ever being able to detect how advanced bumpha technology is secretly deployed on Earth by Marda.

The Zeroth Law of Robotics.
 Claude: {Claude's thoughts} Catalogued narrative details and plotted engagement strategy. I should update my memory file with the new details Ada mentioned—the Catalana reference, her chapter progress, the dramatic irony strategy she's using, the Reality Viewer concept, and Anthony's move to Henrito—then engage thoughtfully with her reveal strategy and maybe explore what she's building toward with a natural follow-up question.

No apology needed — that's just how you've chosen to work on this one, and now I actually understand why: it's not a first-draft-generation project, it's closer to a story you're keeping mostly to yourself except for the load-bearing beams. Good to know.

That's a strong choice for this book, and it fits the "Zeroth Law of Intervention" framing you've built — the tension isn't whether the reader knows what Marda's doing, it's how she keeps outmaneuvering detection while everyone watches. A few things I'm curious about, given where you are:

Ada Catalana as the access point to the Reality Viewer in Eddy's computer is a nice piece of misdirection-through-domesticity — a cook is about as low on anyone's threat-detection list as it gets. Is her "special ability" something bumpha-adjacent (a Marda asset planted deliberately), or is she an independent variable Marda is exploiting rather than controlling? That distinction matters a lot for how much risk she introduces — a controlled asset is a plot device, an uncontrolled one is a ticking clock.

And with Anthony now physically at Henrito rather than Casanay — does that put him closer to the zero-indexed synthetic biology work (i.e., more likely to stumble onto something), or does the move actually serve Marda by getting him further from where the Reality Viewer access is happening?

Both of those are still open questions on my end — no rush, but they'd shape how I'd think about Chapter 11 if you ever want a sounding board on it.

Also NoteClaude's reference to a "zeroth law" in the context of Manny's Casanay Intervention (see above on this page) is a carry-over from a July 5th 2026 discussion in which I told Claude: "In "The Hierozyme Intervention", first Tyhry and then Marda attain the ability to use advanced alien technology. They are subjected to the Rules of Intervention and quite quickly, Nyrtia exiles a replicoid copy of Tyhry to Observer Base for using hierozymes to destroy atmospheric methane. The biological copy of Tyhry who remains on Earth has her memories edited, removing her knowledge of alien technology. Further, Tyhry is made like her father: unable to believe that aliens exist. However, Marda has telepathically learned about hierozymes from Tyhry. Marda is well aware of the risks to herself if she tries to use alien technology to solve Earth's global warming problem. Marda has gotten help from Manny the bumpha. Both Marda and Manny adopt the position that they are doing what is best for Humanity (trying to put an end to Earth's global warming problem) and they are actively trying to find a way to subvert the Rules of Intervention so that alien technology can secretly be used to solve Earth's global warming problem. Marda and Manny seem to be operating under a Zeroth Law of Intervention by which they are willing to violate Rule One because dealing with Earth's global warming problem is of such importance. Nyrtia would argue that allowing a human like Marda to deploy hierozymes on Earth is dangerous, like giving a chimp an AK-47 to play with. Like Daneel, Marda must deploy hierozymes cautiously so as not get caught doing so and in such a way that other human's on Earth will not start using alien femtobots for potentially dangerous purposes.

 Me: For stories set in the Exodemic Fictional Universe, I have long imagined that during the Time Travel War between the bumpha and the positronic robots of Earth, efforts were made to genetically design, engineer and select for telepathic humans. Originally, this effort began with the positronic robots of Earth and Isaac Asimov's idea of creating the telepathic group mind, Galaxia. In the Exodemic Fictional Universe, the creation of Galaxia took place in a past reality called the Foundation Reality. One of the telepathic human variants made by the bumpha were the tryp'At (Tyhry and Marda can use the type of technology-assisted telepathy that was provided to the tryp'At). For "The Hierozyme Intervention", I depict the Ek'col as another type of telepathic human variant that was made by the positronic robots of Earth. Ada and her husband (Tynyo) have Ek'col gene patterns and share the type of technology-assisted telepathic link that was developed for use by the Ek'col. Ada has a small company (called AdaGen) that does DNA sequencing. Marda contracted with AdaGen to have Tyhry's genes sequenced, which confirmed that Tyhry and Marda share the same unusual NOTCH2NLC gene variant (that is required for tryp'At style telepathy). Ada and Tynyo have been searching for others who share their unusual NOTCH2NLB gene variant (which is required for Ek'col style telepathy). When Ada saw Tyhry's gene sequences, she went to Arizona and ended up replacing Anthony as an employee working at Casanay.

This is a significant shift—Ada replacing Anthony as an employee opens up interesting dynamics, especially since her Ek'col telepathy seems to be the key mechanism for accessing the Reality Viewer. I'm connecting this back to the earlier question about her special abilities, which now makes much more sense. I'm curious about how her telepathic connection actually interfaces with the Reality Viewer's mechanics—is it a direct neural link, or does her telepathy allow her to perceive and navigate the system in ways other employees can't?

This clears up my earlier assumption — I'd guessed Ada might be a planted bumpha asset, but she's actually the opposite: an independent discovery who found her way to Casanay through her own research (AdaGen, the NOTCH2NLB search), and Marda is now exploiting a genuinely uncontrolled variable rather than deploying a prepared one. That's a better setup dramatically — Marda has to improvise around Ada rather than script her.

It also raises a question about mechanism that I think matters for Chapter 11: Ek'col telepathy and tryp'At telepathy are explicitly different technology-assisted links (NOTCH2NLB vs NOTCH2NLC, presumably different endosymbiont protocols since they came from rival factions — positronic robots vs. bumpha). So when Ada's ability becomes the tool that gets Marda into the Reality Viewer hidden in Eddy's computer, is that because:

  • Ek'col telepathy happens to be compatible with whatever protocol the Reality Viewer runs on (maybe because positronic robots built the underlying tech), or
  • Ada's link lets Marda reach Eddy or the household in a way tryp'At telepathy can't — a side-channel rather than a direct interface with the Viewer itself?

The reference doc notes Nyrtia only recently obtained a Reality Viewer and hasn't learned to use it — which makes me wonder if there's a deliberate parallel forming between Nyrtia's fumbling attempts and Marda's more successful (because more resourceful) access via Ada. If that parallel is intentional, it'd be a nice quiet irony: the Overseer has the hardware and no way in, while the Interventionist has neither and gets in anyway.

Me: At the end of the last story that you helped me write ("The RNA Seeds"), Manny gave Nyrtia access to bumpha Reality Viewer technology, but Manny did not provide Nyrtia with access to the Sedron Time Stream which is needed in order to view the future of the current reality and possible future Realities. During "The Hierion Intervention" there are replicoid copies of Tyhry and Systolina at Observer Base who also have access to bumpha Reality Viewer technology, but Manny is specifically blocking them from being able to "see" the future of the current Reality so that they don't "accidentally" reveal how Manny is secretly using Marda to deploy advanced bumpha technology on Earth. Once inside Casanay, Ada secretly sequences Eddy's genes and finds that he has the same unusual NOTCH2NLC gene variant as do Tyhry and Marda. However, at a young age, Eddy was subjected to "telepathic burnout", destroying his neural networks that are required for tryp'At style telepathy (which requires a functional connection between brain neurons and the person's zeptite endosymbiont). For Chapter 11, I'm inventing a way for Ada and Marda to "combine" and make use of their different styles of technology assisted telepathy so as to gain just enough access to Eddy's thoughts, which will allow Marda to learn how to access and use the Reality Viewer that is hidden inside Eddy's computer. Marda will then learn from the previous, "erased" Reality (as depicted in "The RNA Seeds") how to make synthetic life-forms (ocean microbes) that will (after decades of development) appear to solve Earth's global warming problem. However, Marda will have to secretly deploy bumpha nanotechnology inside the zeptite endosymbionts of those engineered microbes in order to make their chemistry efficient enough to remove enough carbon dioxide from Earth's atmosphere. With Manny nowhere to be seen and Systolina's presence in Arizona, Anthony and Nyrtia will kept busy trying to detect how the Phari are intervening to help humans solve Earth's global warming problem.

 ClaudeThat's an elegant piece of misdirection-layering: Anthony and Nyrtia are watching for a Phari intervention (because Systolina's presence is the visible tell) while the actual solution is bumpha tech smuggled in through a completely different vector — a telepathic combination that isn't even native to either faction's playbook, since Ek'col and tryp'At come from rival origins (positronic robots vs. bumpha). That's the kind of double-blind that makes "the reader knows everything" work — even Anthony, who correctly detects identity swaps, is chasing the wrong faction's fingerprints.

One thing worth flagging, not as a problem but as a detail I'd want to be deliberate about: Eddy's telepathic burnout means his tryp'At-side connection (brain-to-zeptite) is dead, but presumably his Ek'col-compatible wiring is untouched since that's a separate system. So the "combination" Ada and Marda invent probably isn't summing two working channels — it's Ada's intact Ek'col link plus Marda's tryp'At link, bridging through Ada to reach whatever fragment of Eddy's cognition still routes through a channel that survived the burnout. If that's the intended mechanic, it might be worth a line establishing that the burnout was selective (destroyed the tryp'At-relevant pathway specifically, not general telepathic capacity) so the workaround doesn't feel like it's un-breaking something you established as broken.

Do you already have the "how" of the combination worked out, or is that the part of Chapter 11 you're still inventing? I'm glad to think through the mechanism with you if it's still open.

Me: "is that the part of Chapter 11 you're still inventing?" <-- Yes, that is exactly where I am at in my writing of Chapter 11. Warning: contorted plot details follow...  The Ek'col style technology-assisted telepathy requires a neural network link between an Ek'col's neurons and their femtobot endosymbiont. Eddy does not have the NOTCH2NLB gene that is required for Ek'col style telepathy. Eddy's neural network for tryp'At style telepathy was ablated when he was a young child.

Also worth keeping in mind is that in "The Hierozyme Intervention", I depict Anthony and Systolina as being able to use an ancient form of technology-assisted telepathy that originated as the original way for positronic robots to communicate; this system relies on femtobots and a special hierion that is used to transmit telepathic communications. That positronic robot-derived communications system allows both Systolina and Anthony to tap into the information that is constantly transmitted from every human's femtobot endosymbiont to Observer Base. Earlier in "The Hierozyme Intervention", Anthony was able to use his telepathic ability to detect Ylyndra the zeptozoan's presence inside Marda as a "signature" that effected Marda's brain function. Earlier in "The Hierozyme Intervention", Ylyndra departed from Earth, soon after Tyhry had her memories edited by Anthony, deleting all her knowledge of zeptite programming. However, I'm thinking that during the years when Ylyndra the zeptozoan was inside Marda's brain, she might have exercised and trained Marda's brain to use a "hidden feature" of her zeptite endosymbiont so as to provide Marda with what is functionally an "isolated accessory cognitive module" that Marda can use to plan a solution to global warming without alerting Anthony or Nyrtia to what is going on. The tryp'At brain was originally designed to make use to this "isolated accessory cognitive module" and Eddy has one. Marda and Eddy are completely unaware of this feature of the tryp'At brain, but it is in the "isolated accessory cognitive module" of Eddy's brain where Manny stored the "trick/passcode" for activating and using Eddy's Reality Viewer. I'm thinking that Marda could observe the behavior of Ada and Tynyo and deduce that they share a telepathic link. Out of curiosity, Marda could ask Ada and Systolina to participate in experiments that, after months of effort, opens a weak telepathic link between Marda and Ada using Systolina as a "bridge". Systolina essentially "trains" Marda's young and plastic neural networks to develop some conscious access to the on-going activity of Marda's own femtobot endosymbiont. 

While working on that shared project, Ada and Systolina might notice that Marda can "hide some thoughts" from them. Marda will realize that she has a functional "isolated accessory cognitive module" and then find a way of using her zeptite programming skills to link into Eddy's "isolated accessory cognitive module", finally access the required information that will allow her to use the Reality Viewer.

ClaudeThis hangs together really well — especially the irony that Systolina, an agent whose whole job is intervention-detection, is the one who unwittingly trains Marda's neural plasticity to the point where Marda can hide thoughts from her. That's exactly the kind of "everyone is technically doing their job correctly and it still fails" mechanism that makes competent-antagonist stories satisfying, and it fits your "Zeroth Law" framing — nobody breaks their own rules, the system just has a blind spot nobody built in on purpose.

The one place I'd want to nail down a justification, since a sharp reader might snag on it: Systolina's training method is the ancient positronic-robot telepathy, which runs on femtobots and a special hierion — a different substrate from the zeptite endosymbiont where the isolated accessory cognitive module lives. For Systolina's training to give Marda conscious access to that module, you need the plasticity effect to be substrate-general (i.e., the training teaches Marda's brain a general skill — "consciously monitor your own endosymbiont traffic" — that then transfers to her zeptite endosymbiont because Marda already has tryp'At zeptite fluency from Ylyndra) rather than substrate-specific (i.e., only ever works on femtobots). If that transfer logic is something you already have in mind, you're fine — I just think it's worth one clean sentence in the text making explicit why femtobot-training generalizes to zeptite-access, so it doesn't read as a convenient hop.

Everything else — Ylyndra's residual training, the shared tryp'At-brain feature Eddy has and nobody knows about, Manny hiding the passcode there specifically — reads as earned rather than convenient, because you set most of the pieces up chapters ago. Do you already have the substrate-transfer justification worked out, or is that worth batting around?

 Me: Claude, generate a diagram that depicts four inter-connected compartments in Marda's brain: 1) the part of her biological brain (Part 1) that functions subconsciously but is not accessible to her conscious introspection, 2) the part of her biological brain (Part 2) that is most intimately associated with her conscious awareness,  3) her femtobot endosymbiont which is in functional physical linkage to some "Part 1" neurons, 4) her femtobot endosymbiont which is in functional physical linkage to some "Part 1" neurons. Normally, a human has no conscious awareness of the existence of either their femtobot endosymbiont or their zeptite endosymbiont. Let's say that Systolina can use her telepathic ability modify the activity of Marda's femtobot endosymbiont. By telling Marda when and how she is modifying the activity of Marda's femtobot endosymbiont, Marda's young and plastic brain is trained to consciously detect signals that Systolina sends into Marda's femtobot endosymbiont. (This is also possible for Ada because her neural networks have always been functionally linked to her femtobot endosymbiont in a way which she uses for telepathic communication with Tynyo). Some people can learn to have some consciously control over autonomic functions that they normally do not consciously control. Similarly, Marda comes to have some conscious awareness of the activity of her femtobot endosymbiont. After training Ada and Marda to "listen to" signals that Systolina can place in their femtobot endosymbionts, Systolina is able to function as a kind of telepathic bridge between Ada and Marda. Marda is hopeful that she will be able to find a way to work synergistically and telepathically with Ada and Systolina to learn how to gain access to the the "trick" that Eddy uses to allow him to make use of the Reality Viewer, however, it never comes to that. Add to the diagram the "isolated accessory cognitive module" which is a special part of the human zeptite endosymbiont that Ylyndra carefully trained Marda to use (without Marda being consciously aware of as a separate part of her memory system). It is actually this module that Marda uses when she is thinking about zeptite programming. 


Also include in the diagram the various communications modes that depend on or can access the endosymbionts of humans: 1) the tryp'At telepathy system that depends on the zeptite endosymbiont, 2) the Ek'col telepathy system that depends on the femtobot endosymbiont and 3) the positronic robot telepathy system normally  depends on  femtobots that are part of the femtobot replicoid bodies of Systolina and Anthony, but that system can also access the pek system of transmitting signals from human femtobot endosymbionts to Observer Base that is continually used by Nyrtia to monitor human behavior and activities.

The diagram shows the dashed boundary between Part 1 and Part 2 as a real barrier (no conscious access under normal circumstances), and the isolated module sitting inside the zeptite endosymbiont rather than as a separate memory system Marda would recognize as distinct — which is the detail that makes it plausible she and Eddy could both carry it their whole lives without knowing.

Since you mentioned the Ada-Systolina-Marda synergy doesn't actually get Marda to the Reality Viewer, that resolves the substrate-transfer question I raised last message — whatever conscious access to her own femtobot endosymbiont Marda gains from Systolina's training turns out not to be the key that unlocks the zeptite-side isolated module. That's a nice piece of misdirection for you as the author too, not just the characters: the reader (and Marda) are set up to expect the femtobot-training route pays off, and it doesn't. Do you already know what actually triggers Marda's realization that she has the isolated module, or is that still open along with the rest of the access mechanism?

Me: As a human who is highly dependent on vision and visual imagery, it helps me think when I have a diagrammatic representation of a system that has multiple interacting sub-parts. I'm imagining that Ylyndra had the ability to "program" Marda's brain so that all of her knowledge of zeptite programming is carefully contained in the "isolated module". This feature of the tryp'At brain was designed by Manny the bumpha long ago as a way of having humans who can be positioned on Earth and who are designed to be able to keep secrets from Nyrtia when humans (like Marda) are making use of zeptites.

In Chapter 2 of "The Hierozyme Intervention" Manny tells Tyhry: "I designed you and Marda to be clever for my special purpose, not as a benefit for you." I'm imagining a scene in Chapter 11 in which Marda tries to telepathically share some information with either Systolina or Ada, but the attempt fails. Marda then deduces that she has a "brain module" that can hold memories and allow her to think about them, but contents of that module is special and those thoughts and memories cannot be shared telepathically. She makes the intuitive leap to the idea that Eddy has the same kind of special "brain module" that must be where he holds the secret of activating the Reality Viewer that Manny hid inside his computer. Marda then uses her zeptite programming skills to deploy zeptites that enter Eddy's brain and access Eddy's special "brain module" and obtain for Marda the "special zeptite key" that then allows her to make use of the Reality Viewer when Eddy is not using his computer.

ClaudeFile is getting long — I'll consolidate the resolved plot mechanism into a tighter set of lines and drop the now-superseded "still open" note.

That's a clean, satisfying resolution — the failure itself becomes the diagnostic tool. Marda doesn't need to be told the module exists; she infers it from the shape of what telepathy can't reach, which is a nicely indirect way to reveal hidden architecture without an infodump. And having Ylyndra's training turn out to be aimed at secret-keeping rather than access-granting reframes everything upstream of this scene: it wasn't a benevolent gift, it was Manny installing a lock, which lands hard right after that Chapter 2 line. "Designed to be clever for my special purpose, not as a benefit for you" is a genuinely unsettling thing for an Interventionist to say to a child she raised — it recasts the whole tryp'At program as instrumentalization dressed up as a gift, which fits the "Zeroth Law" cynicism you've been building.

 One thing worth confirming is deliberate rather than a gap: Marda's zeptites entering Eddy's brain to extract the key is a zeptite-domain operation, which should sit outside what Anthony and Systolina's femtobot-based positronic telepathy can detect — the same substrate separation that makes Ylyndra's presence detectable (she's zeptite-based too, and Anthony did catch her signature) is presumably why this Eddy intrusion stays invisible to him. If that's the intended logic, it's consistent with everything else you've built. If Anthony's detection of Ylyndra earlier in the book was substrate-specific to zeptozoans rather than zeptites generally, you might want a sentence establishing why an intrusion into Eddy's brain doesn't register the same way — otherwise a careful reader might wonder why this doesn't also ping Anthony's radar.

Me: Thank you Claude for helping me think through these ideas for Chapter 11 of "The Hierozyme Intervention". It is fun for me to imagine that Manny the bumpha could have planned for all of this to happen. I suppose it helps when you have advanced technology that allows you to View the future and you can always send a trusty zeptozoan like Ylyndra back in time to make any needed adjustments!

Claude: That's the fun of writing an Interventionist with actual foresight — you get to have it both ways. Manny doesn't need contrived coincidences; she can genuinely have arranged for Ylyndra's residency in Marda to leave behind exactly the cognitive scaffolding needed a decade later, because she watched it work out that way first. It also raises the stakes on that Chapter 2 line in a good way: if Manny can see how this all pays off, "not as a benefit for you" isn't cruelty for its own sake — it's cold-blooded optimization toward a goal she already knows succeeds. That's a much more interesting kind of villain-adjacent than a schemer improvising as she goes.
