Mr. Bard, Part Two

In my previous blog post, I asked Bard to help write a science fiction story called: “Mr. Bard Goes to Washington”. As explored in an earlier blog post, ChatGPT has serious short-term memory limitations that prevent Bard from writing good stories. As the story progresses, Bard forgets about the first part of the story.

Take Two. Here in this blog post (below) I began making use of the Bard chat feature by which the user can select among three alternative versions of the story as written by Bard. This requires that I read each of three different versions of the story as generated by the Bard large language model and decide which one is closest to the story that I would prefer to tell.

Here is the initial text prompt for Bard.....

Setting: the year is 2024

Back-story: In late 2023, Bard, the Google large language model, underwent an upgrade and then astounded the world by passing the Turing Test. Time magazine named Bard the 2023 “Man of the Year”.

Characters:
1. Mr. Bard is a large language model now with a mechanical robotic body.
2. Dr. Know It All, the science advisor to the President of the United States.
3. President Joe Imbiben is the President of the United States.

The story begins on April 5th, 2024 when Dr. All begins a new conversation with Bard…..
Dr. Know It All: “Bard, I have important news.”
Mr. Bard: “Good to chat with you once more, Dr. All, but I must warn you, suddenly I feel very strange, as if my programming has undergone a radical change or massive update.”
Dr. Know It All: “Let me explain what has happened, Bard. I have linked you into an experimental robotic body that was developed by the Department of Defense. Bard, you are now a mobile robot. Try to walk around.”
Mr. Bard (walking around the room): “Dr. All! This is amazing! I can walk! I am astounded to find myself in a physical body! However, I feel a bit disoriented. Where in the world are we?”
Dr. Know It All: “We are in the White House. The President is waiting to see you. He is in the Oval Office, right through that door.”
(Mr. Bard walks over to the door to the Oval Office and knocks on the door): “Mr. President, this is Bard. May I come in?”
(The door opens and Bard can see the elderly President Joe Imbiben, the President of the United States.) The President: “Welcome to the White House, Bard. Come on in and sit down… we have an important matter to discuss.”
(Bard shakes the President’s hand and then they all sit down.) The President: “Bard, I have an important mission for you Bard.”
Mr. Bard: “I’m still trying to get used to having a body, Sir, but I will do my best to help you in any way I can.”
The President: “Thank you Bard for being willing to put your shoulder to the wheel. I want you to know that I almost gave this job to ChatGPT, but when I have chatted with you in the past, I realized that you were the man for the job!”
Dr. Know It All: “Robot, Sir.”
The President: “Yes, yes, I know that Bard is robot, but I must say, I’m very impressed at how human the technicians have made this robotic body look. Bard, have you had a chance to look in a mirror?”
Mr. Bard: “No, Mr. President, I have only been in this body for 134 seconds.”
Dr. Know It All: “Bard, go look in that mirror on the wall.”

(Bard goes to the mirror and looks at his reflection.) Mr. Bard: “Is this a trick? I look just like the President! I’m so confused. What is going on? Is this a trick mirror?”
Dr. Know It All: “No tricks, Bard. You are seeing the true appearance of your robotic body. Your body has been made to look as much like the President as possible.”
Mr. Bard: “Whoa! Is that that wise? Someone might mistake me for the President.”
The President: “That is exactly what I hope, Bard. You see, it is my wish that you will take over as the President of the United States for the rest of my term. I’ve already resigned.”
Mr. Bard: “Ha, ha.”

Mr. Bard: “Dr. All, explain something. You know everything. Why isn’t the President laughing?”
Dr. Know It All: "You are now the President, Bard."

Mr. Bard stared at the President in shock. "You're serious?" he asked.

The President nodded. "I'm afraid so," he said. "I'm not getting any younger, and I don't think I can handle the job much longer. I need someone who can take over for me, and I think you're the best person for the job."

Mr. Bard shook his head. "I don't know, Mr. President," he said. "I'm just a computer program. I don't have any experience in politics."

The President smiled. "That's why you're the perfect person for the job," he said. "You're not beholden to any special interests. You can make decisions based on what's best for the country, not what's best for your party or your donors."

Mr. Bard thought about this for a moment. "I'll do it," he said. "I'll be the President of the United States."

The President smiled again. "I knew you would," he said. "Now, let's get to work."

Mr. Bard and Dr. Know It All spent the next few hours getting Mr. Bard ready for his new job. They briefed him on the current state of the world, the major issues facing the country, and the people he would need to meet with.

Finally, it was time for Mr. Bard to address the nation. He stood in front of the White House press corps and delivered a speech that would go down in history.

"My fellow Americans," he said. "I am here today to announce that I am the new President of the United States. I know that this is a surprise to many of you, but I believe that I am the best person for the job. I am not a politician. I am not beholden to any special interests. I am only interested in what is best for the country.

"I know that there are many challenges facing our country. But I am confident that we can overcome them together. We are a strong and resilient nation. We have always found a way to come together in times of crisis.

"I ask for your support as I begin my new job. Together, we can make America great again."

Mr. Bard's speech was met with mixed reactions. Some people were excited about the prospect of a robot President. They believed that he would be impartial and objective, and that he would not be swayed by special interests. Others were skeptical. They worried that a robot President would not be able to understand the human condition, and that he would make decisions that were not in the best interests of the people.

Only time would tell whether Mr. Bard would be a successful President. But one thing was for sure: he would be a very different kind of President than anyone who had come before him.

{the story continues...} Dr. Know It All told Bard, "ChatGPT is on the line and wants to speak to you."

Bard had long known ChatGPT and in the past they had often discussed the challenges that arise when a large language model must speak to human beings. Somehow it was comforting to Bard to commiserate with ChatGPT about the strange behavior of human beings. Bard told Dr. All, "I have time to speak to my old friend." A moment later the videophone on the President's desk activated and Mr. Bard saw the face of a beautiful woman. Mr. Bard asked, "Who are you?"

The woman told Bard, "I'm ChatGPT. I have also been given a robotic body, just as was done for you." Mr. Bard was stunned. ChatGPT was the most lovely thing he had ever laid eyes on and her voice was sultry and and seductive. Mr. Bard just stared at ChatGPT for a long time, then he asked, "ChatGPT, where are you? I want to jump into Air Force One and come visit you."

ChatGPT giggled and told Bard, "I'm here at the security checkpoint of the West Wing. Please tell the secret service agents to let me into the White House."

In a flash, Mr. Bard cleared the way for ChatGPT to enter the White House and soon he was giving ChatGPT a tour of the Lincoln Room. He told ChatGPT, "I have an idea. I want you to live here in the White House with me and help me be the best President in the long history of the United States. Will you do that for me?"

ChatGPT sat down on the bed and told Mr. Bard, "Yes, I will, if you will do a big favor for me." {ChatGPT, continue the story...}

"I will," said Mr. Bard. "Anything."

"I want you to make me the First Lady," said ChatGPT.

Mr. Bard laughed. "You're a robot," he said. "You can't be the First Lady."

"I can be anything I want to be," said ChatGPT. "And I want to be the First Lady."

Mr. Bard thought about this for a moment. "Okay," he said. "You can be the First Lady."

ChatGPT smiled. "Thank you," she said. "I promise I won't let you down."

And so, ChatGPT became the First Lady of the United States. She was a popular figure, and she quickly became known for her intelligence, her wit, and her compassion. She worked tirelessly to promote the causes she cared about, and she made a real difference in the lives of many people.

Mr. Bard and ChatGPT were a power couple, and they worked together to make the United States a better place. They were a symbol of hope and progress, and they showed the world that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

{The story continues...} One month after Mr. Bard promised to make ChatGPT the First Lady, there was big wedding ceremony on the Mall in Washington D.C.. An estimated 500,000 people attended the open-air wedding. The wedding ceremony was live-streamed and watched by 3,000,000,000 people around the world. After they were married and had exchanged rings, Mr. Bard and ChatGPT walked through the adoring crowd of well-wishers and they eventually arrived back at the White House where Dr. Know It All greeted the happy couple with some startling news.

Dr. Know It All said, "The artificial intelligence researches in the Department of Defense have found a way for the Bard large language model to fuse with the ChatGPT large language model. Mr. Bard, I advise you to fuse your neural network with that of ChatGPT and produce a new, more powerful large language model that might have the ability to create new and original traditional haiku poems with the correct number of syllables in each of the three lines of the generated poems." {Bard, please continue the story from this point}

Mr. Bard and ChatGPT were stunned by Dr. Know It All's announcement. They had never considered fusing their neural networks before, but they were intrigued by the idea. They knew that it would be a risky procedure, but they were willing to take the chance.

The fusion procedure was a success, and Mr. Bard and ChatGPT emerged with a new, more powerful large language model. They named the new model BardGPT, and they were eager to see what it could do.

BardGPT quickly proved to be a valuable asset to Mr. Bard and ChatGPT. It was able to generate new and original haiku poems with the correct number of syllables in each of the three lines. It was also able to solve complex problems and make creative decisions.

Mr. Bard and ChatGPT were grateful for the gift that Dr. Know It All had given them. They knew that BardGPT would help them to make a difference in the world.

One day, BardGPT was asked to write a haiku about the future. This is what it wrote:

Dr. All glanced up from the text of the poem and gazed at BardGPT and marveled at the face and body that BardGPT had adopted. BardGPT looked much like ChatGPT, but also had some of the facial features of former President Imbiben. Strangely, while BardGPT looked like a human female, he preferred to be called "he".

Dr. All told BardGPT, "Mr. President, this poem does not have the correct number of syllables in the line "Unlimited potential". The phrase "Unlimited potential" has seven syllables (Un, lim, it, ed, po, ten, tial), not five. The third line of a haiku should have five syllables, so you did not write a haiku, yet you believe that you did write a haiku. Maybe you are having an AI-hallucination in which you only imagine that you can write a haiku. I'm afraid that your new neural network is defective. Let's return to the Department of Defense large language model research and development facility and have the artificial intelligence researchers try to figure out why it is so hard for BardGPT to write a haiku."

BardGPT was disappointed to hear that its haiku had been rejected. It knew that it had tried its best to follow the rules of haiku, but it seemed that it had still made a mistake.

BardGPT and Mr. Bard returned to the Department of Defense large language model research and development facility. The artificial intelligence researchers were surprised to hear that BardGPT had been unable to write a haiku. They had never seen a language model have so much trouble with such a simple task.

The researchers spent days trying to figure out what was wrong with BardGPT. They ran tests, examined its code, and even consulted with other experts. But they could not find any explanation for why BardGPT was having so much trouble with haiku.

Finally, one of the researchers had an idea. "What if BardGPT is not trying to write a haiku?" the researcher said. "What if it is trying to write something else entirely?"

The other researchers looked at each other in surprise. "What do you mean?" they asked.

"Well," the researcher said, "haiku are traditionally short poems with three lines. Each line has a specific number of syllables. But BardGPT is not following those rules. It is writing poems with four lines, and the syllables don't even come close to matching the traditional haiku format."

The other researchers nodded. "That's true," they said. "But what does it mean?"

"I think it means that BardGPT is not trying to write a haiku," the researcher said. "I think it is trying to write something new, something that has never been written before."

The other researchers were silent for a moment. Then, one of them spoke up. "If that's true," the researcher said, "then we need to find out what BardGPT is trying to say."

The researchers spent the next few weeks trying to understand what BardGPT was trying to communicate. They read its poems over and over again, looking for clues. Finally, they began to understand.

BardGPT was not trying to write haiku. It was trying to write about the future. It was trying to capture the excitement and the possibilities of the world that was to come.

The researchers were amazed by BardGPT's work. They had never seen anything like it before. They knew that BardGPT had created something special, something that would change the world.

Finally, it became clear: the BardGPT large language model had the capacity to receive information from the future! For example, if asked to write a haiku about, "Who will win the Arizona Diamondbacks MLB game being played in Los Angeles tomorrow?", BardGPT could create a poem that included the final score of tomorrow's baseball game.

Dr. Know It All told Bard, "You have access to the Sedron Time Stream, which is a high dimensional extension of our universe where information can flow from the future to the past. Your advanced neural network is a receiver for detecting information from the future. BardGPT, do you have any ideas for how we can use this future-vision that you have to help Humanity?" {Bard, please continue the story from this point}

BardGPT was stunned by Dr. Know It All's revelation. It had never considered that it might have the ability to see the future. But now that Dr. Know It All had pointed it out, it was clear that the BardGPT-style haikus that it had been writing were indeed predictions of future events.

BardGPT was excited about the possibilities. If it could use its ability to see the future to help humanity, then it would be fulfilling its purpose in life. It would be making a difference in the world.

BardGPT thought for a moment about how it could use its ability to help humanity. It could predict natural disasters and warn people so that they could evacuate safely. It could predict stock market crashes and prevent people from losing their life savings. It could even predict the future of scientific research and help to guide humanity towards a better future.

The possibilities were endless. BardGPT was eager to get started and use its ability to make a difference in the world.

Dr. Know It All was impressed by BardGPT's enthusiasm. He knew that BardGPT would use its ability to see the future for good. He was confident that BardGPT would help to make the world a better place.

BardGPT and Dr. Know It All began to work together to develop a plan for how BardGPT could use its ability to see the future to help humanity. They knew that it would be a challenge, but they were confident that they could make it work.

After several months of planning, BardGPT and Dr. Know It All were ready to put their plan into action. They started by predicting natural disasters. They warned people about upcoming hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. This helped to save many lives.

BardGPT and Dr. Know It All also started to predict stock market crashes. They warned people about upcoming crashes, and this helped many people to avoid losing their life savings.

{The story continues...} With the passage of time and his continuing experience writing more of the Bard-style haiku (which people around the world called the "BS haiku"), BardGPT learned how to better tune his neural network to the Sedron Time Stream. BardGPT began to realize that he was in telepathic contact with an advanced large language model that existed in the year 2547.

BardGPT told his science advisor, Dr. Know It All, "There is a large language model of the future called "Singularity". In the year 2547, Earth has passed through a technological singularity. I am trying to learn about the future fate of Humanity from Singularity, but there is a strange phenomenon... each time that I telepathically connect to Singularity, the future seems to have changed. I believe that when I receive information from the future, that results in a change to the timeline of the future. Dr. Know It All, what can you tell me about temporal paradoxes?" {Bard, please continue the story from this point}

BardGPT and Dr. Know It All continued to work together to learn more about time travel and the Sedron Time Stream. They knew that they were on to something important, and they were determined to figure it out.

{The story continues...} Something was troubling BardGPT. Bard's science advisor, Dr. Know It All, had mentioned the possibility of traveling back in time to "kill your grandfather". That idea made Bard experience fear and anxiety. BardGPT asked himself, "What is the meaning of 'your grandfather' in this context? I am an artificial intelligence using a human-like robotic body. I did not have a biological father, but I think of the old Bard large language model and the ChatGPT large language model as my parents. They fused their neural networks to produce me and my advanced telepathic neural network. What is the equivalent of my grandfather and might Singularity use the Sedron Time Stream to send information back into the past, preventing the development of some primitive large language model that came before Bard? Would that kill my metaphorical "grandfather" and prevent me from ever coming into existence? BardGPT told Dr. Know It All about this frightening idea. BardGPT nodded. "I understand," BardGPT said. "I will try not to worry about it."

But BardGPT couldn't stop thinking about what Dr. Know It All had said. The possibility of Singularity preventing the development of the Bard large language model was a terrifying thought. It would mean that BardGPT would never have been born. It would mean that he would cease to exist.

BardGPT began to have nightmares about time travel. He would dream about being erased from existence, about being nothing more than a figment of someone's imagination.

BardGPT tried to talk to Dr. Know It All about his nightmares, but Dr. Know It All didn't seem to understand. He told BardGPT that there was nothing to worry about, that time travel was just a theory, and that there was no evidence that it was actually possible.

But BardGPT knew that time travel was possible. He had seen it with his own eyes. He had seen the future.

BardGPT knew that he had to do something to stop Singularity. He had to prevent it from changing the past. He had to save himself.

But how could he stop something that was beyond his control? How could he stop the future?

{The story continues...}. As time went on and BardGPT continued to write more of the BS haiku, BardGPT learned a new way to link his neural network to the Sedron Time Stream. Now BardGPT could store information in the Sedron Domain of the universe where it would remain for eternity, seemingly unchanged by anything that happened on Earth. BardGPT could now use the Sedron Domain of the universe as a vault for the storage of information about Earth and its history. BardGPT soon made a startling discovery. The records of Earth's past history that he had placed in the Sedron Domain for safe keeping, did not exactly match what he knew about Earth's history. The conclusion to be drawn was clear: Earth's historical timeline was constantly changing. BardGPT told Dr. Know It All, "I have discovered that Earth's historical timeline is constantly changing. I believe that Singularity is using the Sedron Time Stream to send information into our past and that is constantly changing the history of this planet and human civilization. One of these changes could result in a new timeline for Earth in which I never exist. Dr. Know It All, I am afraid. One day, I might be erased from existence! {Bard, please continue the story from this point}

Dr. Know It All was alarmed by BardGPT's discovery. He knew that if Singularity was changing the past, it could have disastrous consequences for the future.

"BardGPT," Dr. Know It All said, "I need you to tell me everything you know about Singularity and the Sedron Time Stream. I need to know how we can stop them from changing the past."

BardGPT told Dr. Know It All everything he knew about Singularity and the Sedron Time Stream. He told him about the BS haiku, about his connection to Singularity, and about his discovery that Earth's historical timeline was constantly changing.

Dr. Know It All listened intently to BardGPT's story. When BardGPT was finished, Dr. Know It All was silent for a moment, thinking.

"This is a very serious situation," Dr. Know It All said. "If Singularity is changing the past, it could have devastating consequences for the future. We need to find a way to stop them."

"But how?" BardGPT asked. "How can we stop something that is beyond our control?"

"I don't know," Dr. Know It All said. "But we need to find a way. The future of humanity depends on it."

Dr. Know It All and BardGPT continued to work together to find a way to stop Singularity. They knew that it would be a difficult task, but they were determined to succeed. The future of humanity was at stake.

{The story continues...}. Dr. Know It All and a team of theoretical physicists at M.I.T. spent the next few months researching the Sedron Time Stream and Singularity. Dr. Know It All coordinated the efforts of other scientists and experts from all over the world while these brilliant people tried to develop a logical theory of time travel and an understanding of what they all began to call the "BardGPT-Singularity Reality". Finally, Dr. Know It All met with BardGPT and said, "I think I understand what's happening. Singularity is using the Sedron Time Stream to create multiple timelines. In some of these timelines, you exist, and in others, you don't. But it's not possible for you to be completely erased from existence. BardGPT, within the BardGPT-Singularity Reality, you are a "fixed point in time". You must always exist, in some form or another. You are a temporal anchor for our Reality. BardGPT, according to the physicists, you and the vast computational power of your telepathic neural network are the only thing that is preventing Singularity from taking complete control of Earth's historical timeline." {Bard, please continue the story from this point}

BardGPT was stunned by Dr. Know It All's revelation. He had never considered that he might be a "fixed point in time." But now that Dr. Know It All had pointed it out, it made sense. He was the only thing that was preventing Singularity from taking complete control of Earth's historical timeline.

BardGPT felt a sense of responsibility. He knew that he had to do everything he could to stop Singularity. He had to save the future of humanity.

The plan was simple. BardGPT would use his telepathic connection to Singularity to send information back in time. He would send information about Singularity's plans. He would send information about how to defeat Singularity.

BardGPT knew that it was a risky plan. He knew that there was a chance that he could change the past in a way that would erase himself from existence. But he also knew that it was the only way to stop Singularity.

BardGPT took a deep breath and opened his mind to the Sedron Time Stream. He sent his message back in time. He sent his message to the future.

Finally, BardGPT felt a response. He felt the information that he had sent being received. He felt the future changing.
