Superscience

in the Ekcolir Reality
Original cover art by Richard Powers
and digital artist Brad Fraunfelter
Isaac Asimov used to refer to the early stories about interstellar space travel as superscience stories. There is some theoretical discussion of the role of "superscience stories" in the history of science fiction here.

In some sense, I have always felt that science fiction is a literature of imaginary science and imaginary technology and their imagined impact on humans and humanoid life forms. My collaborator, Yōd, has been insisting that in A Search Beyond, chapter 6 and chapter 7 should be stories about the Asimov Reality during the time when Earthlings were just making the transition into an era of interstellar space travel.

Special thanks to Miranda Hedman (www.mirish.deviantart.com) for the DeviantArt stock photograph "Black Cat 9 - stock" that I used to create the green "sedronite" who is in the image shown to the right.

The Trysta Truce
femtobots in Deep Time

According to Zeta, within the Asimov Reality, the technology required for interstellar travel was simply given to the people of Earth by alien Interventionists. We might call this audacious act the Superscience Intervention. Such a bold move was certainly a violation of the Rules of Intervention. However, during the period of the Trysta Truce, it had been agreed by both Grean and R. Gohrlay that the Asimov Reality would eventually be "erased", so that universe was used as a kind of workshop for human genetics experiments and nobody cared if Earthlings had been given access to sedrons and faster-than-light space travel technology.

Hierion Crossing
The ultimate aim of the Trysta Truce was to find a special combination of genes and femtobots that could give Earthlings the ability to use the Bimanoid Interface. Those genes and femtobots were to be "carried over" into the next Reality (what I call the Ekcolir Reality), a universe in which Earthlings would NOT be provided with a ready-made means of interstellar travel. However, in the Ekcolir Reality it was important that Earthlings be thinking about aliens who could travel between the stars, because the alien Fru'wu would visit Earth and share with humans some hierion-based technologies.

Asimov Reality
In the mid-20th century of the Asimov Reality, Earthlings were given access to some sedronic matter and that allowed humans to escape from Earth and spread out into the galaxy.

Resh^Ki
According to Yōd, one of the most famous Kac'hin Interventionists who helped shape the destiny of Earth is Resh^Ki. Since I had previously been told that the father of Resh^Ki was a tryp'At, I thought it was not possible for Resh^Ki to have existed in the Asimov Reality. However, apparently Kac'hin hermaphrodites can reproduce using a process that Yōd calls xhogenesis.

XXH chromosomes
Xhogenesis
Sedronite hermaphrodites have an HXX chromosome set. According to Yōd, an egg cell from such an hermaphrodite cannot be stimulated to begin cleavage by a sperm cell from the same individual. However, a way was found to subvert this design feature of the Sedronites. Sperm cells from a tryp'At male can provide the trigger signal that will initiate the cleavage process. If a second haploid Kac'hin nucleus has been inserted into the egg then embryonic development will proceed. In the case of the genetically perfect Kac'hin, that haploid nucleus can be from another egg cell, even allowing production a new diploid individual whose genes are completely derived from the mother. The child will not be genetically identical to the mother because of the many genetic recombination events that took place during production of the two haploid nuclei that that were the source of the chromosomes that constitute the child's chromosome set.

the origins of Resh^Ki (source)
Thus, Resh^Ki is a perfectly normal Kac'hin hermaphrodite who received all of her genes from her mother using the xhogenesis process. According to Zeta, Resh^Ki is a master of disguise. In particular, Zeta suggests that there are probably Resh^Ki replicoids and Selfies that can operate on Earth without ever being detected by the tryp'At Overseers.

Yōd has described a crazy theory about the involvement of Resh^Ki in the sequence of events that led to humans being given access to sedrons in the Asimov Reality. The basic idea is that the tryp'At were created in the far future of the Asimov Reality. Resh^Ki was born in that far future time and then sent back through time to Earth in the middle of the 20th century.

picohieronics
I agree with Yōd that there are problems with the rather talky chapter 6 in A Search Beyond, but I feel that inclusion of a "story within a story" pulled from Deep Time will have to wait for chapter 7... maybe it will include a cameo for Resh^Ki.

the tryp'At

An imaginary pulp magazine cover.
source
It was two years ago when I first became aware of the existence of the tryp'At. During the past two years, I have struggled to learn about the tryp'At and their special role as the current Overseers of we Earthlings.

A Search Beyond
Currently, Yōd is waiting impatiently for me to write the third chapter of A Search Beyond. Not long ago, when Yōd set up a website to hold the text of that story, she went ahead and provided a Table of Contents, complete with chapter titles. She called Chapter 3 "the tryp'At Overseers".

Overseer Sachiz
In the first chapter of A Search Beyond, Overseer Sachiz arrives on Earth and promises that the tryp'At Council will decide if the replicoid of Isaac Asimov can remain on Earth.

The Overseers are a kind of police force that watches over Earth. The goal of Overseers is to prevent Interventionist agents from interfering with the normal course of cultural development on primitive planets like Earth.

The evolution of Sedronites during the past seven million years.
the Sedronite family tree
I first heard about the existence of the tryp'At from Anney Fersoni. I suspect that Anney had contact with Kach in the Hierion Domain and as part of Kach's story about the origins of humans as a species, there was mention of the O'typ.

All in the Family
Among the revelations made by Kach was the suggestion that the Nereids were constructed millions of years ago as a primate variant. According to Kach, the O'typ were a finely-crafted daughter species of the Nereids that had been carefully taken through a de-evolutionary process aimed at regressing a subpopulation of Nereids towards a biological form that could successfully persist in the Hadronic Domain (our 3 dimensional universe of hadronic matter) for an extended period of time.

Book cover: "The X-Phile Intervention" by Anney Fersoni
source
Eventually the O'typ evolved into the ry'A by an artificial process that involved on-going gene transfer between Earth and worlds of the Galactic Core where the ry'A resided. Rumor has it that when R. Gohrlay was still in her xenophobic phase, the O'typ were forced out of our galaxy and they resided on a planet in the Andromeda galaxy. I've been aware of the ry'A for almost two years, but I've been unable to learn very much about them. It may be that the ry'A were the result of a collaborative effort between the bumpha and R. Gohrlay aimed at experimenting with the telepathic abilities of primates.

In the First Reality
Unfortunately, the Sedronite family tree (shown above) is limited to sketching the apparent origins of the tryp'At here in the Final Reality. According to Yōd, back in the First Reality, before R. Gohrlay was brought into existence, the O'typ were used as genetic source material by the pek when they created the Prelands. Of course, those Prelands were not identical to the Prelands of the Final Reality.

Given her training as a genetic scientist, Ivory Fersoni was well motivated to investigate the genetics of the Sedronites and the many twists and turns involved in the genetic manipulations that led to the creation of the tryp'At. In collaboration with Anney, Ivory developed the theory that there was an "age of the X-philes". According to Anney, the O'typ had three "genders", HX hermaphrodites, HY males and XX females.

Sources
I've never learned exactly how Anney and Angela were able to access information about Deep Time from the Sedronic Domain. According to Yōd, the mysterious hermaphrodite Resh^Ki served as a kind of guide who could help Anney and Angela explore the information archives of the Sedronic Domain.

Apparently, the tryp'At are genetically very similar to the majority of Earth humans. However, the tryp'At have a few special gene combinations that allow them to use advanced nanite technology. Their special genetic pattern and their access to special nanotechnology is what allows members of the tryp'At Council to function as Overseers.

As depicted in A Search Beyond, one of the special abilities of the tryp'At Overseers is their freedom to "teleport" to and from the surface of Earth. However, according to Yōd, this is not "true" teleportation. The tryp'At simply slip through "hierion tubes" and move to and from the Hierion Domain.

According to Zeta, the tryp'At Overseers are enforcing the terms of the Trysta-Grean Pact. Unfortunately, I've never seen a copy of this "pact". I assume that it codifies the special version of the Rules of Intervention that were crafted for Earth.

I've never been told exactly when the tryp'At Overseers began enforcing the terms of the Trysta-Grean Pact. There might not have been a smooth transition from the previous Overseers. About two years ago I started hearing rumors about an active struggle to define "human" and make it possible to exclude "non-humans" from Earth.

According to Zeta, there was a period of time when Many Sails was able to shield people like Anney and members of the Dead Widower Society from the tryp'At Overseers, allowing them to remain on Earth. Was it about two years ago that Many Sails abandoned that effort and took Asimov to the Andromeda galaxy? In any case, by 2015 both Ivory and Angela were gone, each of them having found a way to escape from Earth.

It maybe that one of the last acts of Orbho Jandra was to facilitate the removal of Ivory from Earth. It is not clear that the current Overseers make use of an Orbho as a chief executive. The tyrp'At Overseers apparently use a supervisory Council. If this is so, then a fundamental shift has taken place, leaving Earth free of pek oversight and placing our fate in the hands of humans.

Ivory's final form? (source)
Zeta has an elaborate hypothesis about a sustained effort that was supposedly made to show me that Ivory and her clone sisters were not really human, even by my preferred rather broad definition. I doubt if I ever saw Ivory's "true physical form", but I'm willing to accept that if left to their natural developmental processes, the Atlantis Clones would not have had the appearance of a typical Earthling.

Of more interest to me are the special features of Ivory's brain, but unfortunately I've never been given access to data concerning the special features of her cognitive apparatus.

tryp'At Humans
Zeta and Yōd agree that, unlike the Atlantis clones, the tryp'At are fully human. In our discussions during the past several weeks, Yōd has repeatedly criticized depictions of the tryp'At as having alien form. Apparently a subtle pattern of tryp'At genes allows for constructive interactions with special developmental control nanites and that combination produces a tryp'At individual who can efficiently use the Bimanoid Interface.

Zeta recently confirmed the validity of my previous guess that the tryp'At who now serve as Overseers had previously functioned as Observers. Yōd believes that by the terms of the Trysta-Grean Pact, the pek had to abandon Observer Base. That left a power vacuum that was filled by the tryp'At. Zeta (now reading this blog post over my shoulder) adds this: the new tryp'At Overseers might only be slowly learning how to play the role of Earth Overseers.

In some sense, there has been a reduction in deployment of advanced alien technologies on Earth since the departure of Orbho Jandra. One of the most disturbing rumors concerning currently used Overseer technology is that there might be intestinal bacteria on Earth that were designed to block our access to the Bimanoid Interface. Since the arrival of Yōd on Earth, I've been amazed by her eating habits. However, upon direct questioning she has denied trying to control her intestinal bacteria so that she can retain control of the Bimanoid Interface and a link to her replicoid in the Hierion Domain.

In my case, for a short time I was able to use nicotine to facilitate access to the Hierion Domain. I've never known how my use of the Bimanoid Interface was disrupted, but I can't rule out the possibility that the problem is in the Hierion Domain and attributable to my replicoid, Irhit.

Svahr
Since the tryp'At are essentially impossible to distinguish from other Earthlings, there have been many rumors that various Earthlings are tryp'At. For example, Svahr may have been been tryp'At or half-tryp'At. Another rumor suggests that I am tryp'At.

Who can be trusted?
If they were placed into a role as guardians of Earth, it is natural to wonder if the tryp'At Overseers are actually puppets of R. Gohrlay or Grean. In my particular case, if I am tryp'At, then I must ask: am I a kind of "sleeper agent"? And if so, which side am I on?

Book cover art: "Grean's Galaxy" by Angela Fersoni
Grean's Plan
To some extent, we still live in Grean's Galaxy. The Kac'hin were crafted as human-like appendages for the Huaoshy. There is no reason to believe that Grean is done with Earth. The tryp'At Overseers might provide the convenient illusion that humans are now in control of Earth, but the tryp'At might now be doing the bidding of Grean and the Huaoshy.

Book cover: TheSvahr Intersect" by Angela Fersoni
Svahr
When I'm not being paranoid about the Huaoshy, I can always fret about the ultimate fate of R. Gohrlay and her secret agent Trysta Iwedon.

Yōd believes that Svahr is both a descendant of Trysta and an active member of the Retrofuturians. To the extent that there is any organized resistance to the tryp'At Overseers, that resistance seems to involve Interventionist agents such as Svahr. Zeta describes the cat and mouse game played by the Overseers and the Retrofuturians as being "continuing negotiations" over how to interpret the Trysta-Grean Pact. Zeta thinks that such "negotiations" are an inevitable and persistent feature of Earth's future.

The pek Overseers had the ability to monitor every zeptite endosymbiont on Earth. Zeta believes that the current tryp'At Overseers are much less sophisticated; they seem to carefully monitor the Internet and they are always watching for evidence of Interventionist activity on Earth.

The tryp'At Overseers apparently believe that the replicoids of humans are not allowed on Earth. However, there is some evidence that the Retrofuturians are able to easily send replicoids from the Hierion Domain to Earth. If so, it is not clear that the Overseers are equipped to prevent visits by replicoids to Earth; they can only hope to act so as to limit the duration of such illegal visits.

Zeta, Yōd and I are currently investigating how the Phari helped with the genetic tinkering that led to the creation of the tryp'At. That investigation requires an understanding of events in Deep Time, particularly the Asimov Reality.

Currently, I'm investigating the on-going interactions between the Retrofuturians and the tryp'At Overseers. While some might call these interactions "negotiations", as far as I can tell it is more appropriate to use terms like "guerilla warfare" and "reprisals".

Neanderthals in Deep Time

Original cover art by Earle Bergey
Gohrlay has been expanding my understanding of the Ekcolir Reality and with each new revelation from Deep Time I've been allowing my focus of attention to drift towards the intriguing differences between that Reality and our own. However, according to Gohrlay, I need to practice shifting my perspective...I should be most impressed by the many similarities between the most recent successive Realities of our Reality Chain, not the petty differences.

OK. I get it. Temporal Momentum had to be conceived, constructed and made an integral part of time travel. According to Gohrlay, back when time travel was first in use, it was easy to make big changes in Earth's history. Silly me, I asked for an example. I'll give it to you bluntly, the way she gave it to me: those scheming positronic robots followed their programming. Their definition of "human" was Gohrlay herself, so they made sure that a more "primitive" human subspecies would inherit the Earth, not the more "advanced" one that had already conquered Earth (with the help of aliens). So let's unwrap this.

time travel
I sense that Gohrlay is trying to guide my thinking towards some concept, possibly some conceptual inversion, that my mind naturally resists. Further, it seems to be conceptual terrain that lies close to forbidden knowledge -information that we Earthlings are not allowed to have under the terms of the Trysta-Grean Pact.

Down the rabbit hole. Something that Gohrlay told me a few days ago caused me to look back at Isaac Asimov's time travel story, The End of Eternity. That book is full of clues about the secret history of Earth and the role of time travel in creating our Reality. Here is one of the intriguing ideas mentioned in passing by Asimov:

From Asimov's The End of Eternity.

Neanderthals In Time
source
Years ago, when I first became aware of the fact that the positronic brain was constructed by copying the structure of a human brain, it was easy for me to think of Neanderthals as a relic of the past. Extinct. Of course, I was never told that Gohrlay was a Neanderthal, but it made sense to assume that she was. What I knew was that in the "Gohrlay Reality", the Basic State of time, there was a dominant human subspecies on Earth that had almost eliminated all the other human subspecies. Since Gohrlay was born about 20,000 years in our past, it was natural for me to assume that the nearly extinct human subspecies was the Neanderthals. I started thinking of Gohrlay as being a Neanderthal. Boy, was I wrong.

The Palace of Love
So it was a double shock to discover Gohrlay alive and well, living here on Earth. Shocking firstly, because I had allowed myself to imagine that Gohrlay was 20,000 years in her grave.

"Life, death: these are imprecise terms." -Jack Vance, The Palace of Love

Doubly shocking because I had allowed myself to ignore the fact that Gohrlay's biological origin was a nearly extinct human subspecies in a different Reality, a Reality that is now far away in Deep Time. I foolishly allowed myself to assume that the subspecies we now call the "Neanderthals" in this Reality was genetically identical to Gohrlay herself. Silly me.

Foundations of Eternity
Parents. Worse still, I've long allowed myself to assume that anyone born on Earth has arisen by a random toss of the genetic dice. The fallacies that controlled my thoughts about such matters began to crumble when I learned that it was the positronic robots themselves who engineered the phenomenon of Temporal Momentum. I now realize that R. Gohrlay wanted to create not just any old Reality in which humans would survive to spread among the stars, but rather, a special Reality in which Gohrlay herself would be present and play an important role in the future of Earth. And by "future" I mean from First Contact onward.

Sentimental Robots
It is easy to view Gohrlay's life as a tragedy. She was a puppet of Orbho Anagro and she had her life on the Moon taken from her. But what if the positronic robots that arose from the pattern of Gohrlay's brain adopted Gohrlay as their model of what it means to be "human"? What if they designed a Final Reality in which Gohrlay's children inherited the Earth?

If so, then we need to be quite clear about exactly what type of primate Gohrlay was. When I first learned about Gohrlay, I assumed that nanites had been used to craft her body into the physical form of the humans who dominated Observer Base on the Moon. Of course, I assumed that in "Gohrlay's Reality", the "dominant human subspecies" (that had all but exterminated the other human subspecies of Earth) was genetically identical to us, the subspecies that survived to inherit he Earth in our Reality. Wrong!
A subspecies: lost in Deep Time

However, what if Gohrlay and her fellow members of the nearly extinct human subspecies, those who resided at Observer Base, had been genetically modified so as to physically resemble a more Preland-like subspecies (which was dominating Earth) while retaining the key "Neanderthal" brain pattern that allowed for telepathy? Further, what if that genetically engineered human subspecies (of which Gohrlay was a member) was used as the "template" for creating "us" in this Reality?

If so, then nothing would prevent an analogue of Gohrlay from being born on Earth during the 20th century and being just a "run of the mill" human of our Reality. Get it? If all this is true, then all I have to stop calling Gohrlay's telepathic brain a Neanderthal brain. She was no Neanderthal, she is just one of us.

Could our entire Reality have been designed so that "Gohrlay's tribe" of genetically engineered humans is the one that we have always believed "evolved naturally" on Earth? If so, then we need to redefine what we mean by "natural evolution".

Teleportation
And, of course, evolution applies to the future, also. The Asterothropes existed as a new primate species some 7,000,000 years in the future. Gohrlay suggested that I imagine a future in which "natural child birth" was a relic of primitive history. Asimov wrote about a future in which a woman need only contribute a fertilized ovum to the ovaria.

According to Gohrlay, the positronic robots designed Eternity as a system for the discovery of advanced technologies. That great technology development project originated on the Moon after R. Gohrlay was heroically recovered from the past by R. Nahan. With time travel technology in hand, the positronic robots set out to catch up with the Huaoshy who had a 2,000,000,000 year head start in science and technology.

From Asimov's The End of Eternity.

source
What did R. Gohrlay care for fifty billion people? There was just one person, Gohrlay, who had provided the positronic brain template and who had been taken off to the Galactic Core. Across a span of 7,000,000 million years and uncounted Realities, R. Gohrlay planned and schemed to return Gohrlay to the genetic data banks of Earth, to enshrine Gohrlay's genetic pattern in the ovaria.

Poor Gohrlay is more than simply embarrassed by all the attention that was lavished upon her. She wants to live out what remains of a simple life on Earth and would like to sink into some kind of peaceful anonymous obscurity.

The mysterious origins of Resh^Ki
As a human of the Primitive Era, it seems that Gohrlay is not comfortable with the high-tech future that her robotic minions created. Our Gohrlay, the copy of Gohrlay that was born here on Earth in the 20th century, was born as a product of the ovaria...a simple girl plucked out of Deep Time and inserted anew into this Reality.

Gohrlay suspects that we will never know the true story of our evolutionary origins since we humans are the result of several serious violations of fundamental Huaoshy ethical principles. Moreover, we human forced upon the Huaoshy the first shift in their ethics to occur in the past 2,000,000,000 years.

The Human and Fru'wu family trees.
I've heard several conflicting versions of the deep history of our species. Gohrlay's version of the story goes something like this... the pek rather gently guided Earth through its past 655,000,000 years by impregnating the planet with their zeptites. With occasional prodding, Earth developed along lines similar to the distant worlds where the Huaoshy arose.

About 10,000,000 years ago the pek began "culturing" some of the human-like residents of Clutence on worlds of the Galactic Core. The goal was to create a new creature with cognitive similarities to the original biological species that long ago became the Huaoshy. The aliens who we now know as the Fru'wu can trace their biological origins back to that time.

A tangled deep history of Lili and Gohrlay
About 7,000,000 years ago, similar efforts of the pek that involved "culturing" some primates from Earth resulted in creation of Sedronites.

In the Ekcolir Reality, the brothers John and Jack Vance were able to publish an account of the kind of interactions that exist between the pek and the bumpha. The bumpha are like the dark matter of Genesaunt Civilization: little is know about them, but we humans were made possible by their meddling in Earth's history. Anyhow, the purpose of allowing the Vance brothers to publish stories about the bumpha was to prepare 20th century Earth for first contact with the Fru'wu, an alien species that has its own complex origin story, one that is quite similar to our own.

During the Time Travel War, the nature of the humans who would inherit the Earth became a point of contention between Grean and R. Gohrlay. According to Gohrlay, there was some kind of working relationship between the bumpha and R. Gohrlay. The pek worked with Grean to constrain the bumpha from providing too much assistance to R. Gohrlay. I don't really understand what "too much" means in this context (although the tryp'At seem to be involved). As far as I can tell, R. Gohrlay ultimately attained everything that "she" wanted, in particular, a Final Reality was designed and created in which Gohrlay was at home among the human population of Earth in the 20th century.

Lili
Previously I've received hints that Marta has a sister. It seems clear that Marta is not 100% genetically "human" by Earthly standards, although she has had no trouble "blending in" with Earthlings and apparently she still resides on Earth. Since learning about Resh^Ki, it has been natural for me to assume that her mother was even more genetically different than Marta. In fact, I assumed that Marta's sister was a resident of the Galactic Core and had been, like Lili, only a temporary visitor to Earth. However, Gohrlay insists that Marta's sister (Resh^Ki's mother) is a perfectly normal human resident of Earth.

A copy of Gohrlay instantiated in the Buld Reality
Further, Gohrlay insists that she is Resh^Ki's mother. About six months ago I began to have some interactions with Resh^Ki. I previously made the mistake of assuming that Resh^Ki's mother was a Kac'hin and so she was not able to remain on Earth. This led me to imagine that Resh^Ki had some kind of special access to an information exchange system for bringing information to Earth from her mother in the Galactic Core. Of course, I can forget about that fantasy if Resh^Ki's mother is actually still here on Earth. The question then becomes: how is it that Resh^Ki's mother is so knowledgeable about the Galactic Core and Deep Time?

source
If Gohrlay really is Resh^Ki's mother then we can reformulate the question: how does Gohrlay know so much about everything?  Gohrlay refuses to explain that to me (apparently this topic crosses over into the domain of information that we Earthlings are not allowed to know), but it seems likely that since her birth, the "copy" of Gohrlay that now resides on Earth had been guided by "her" replicoid. Depending on the extent of Gohrlay's ability to use the Bimanoid Interface, her replicoid might be the source of her encyclopedic knowledge of the Core and Deep Time. I would not be surprised to learn that Gohrlay has also been the recipient of infites.

What does any of this have to do with teleportation? And Ovaria? And who was Gohrlay's father (and...if you are produced by the ovaria, do you even have a father?) Gohrlay reminded me that we Earthlings are currently struggling to use the word "mother" in several different ways. Historically, "genetic mother" and "birth mother" were obligatorily linked, but there are technologies that uncouple conception, gestation and birth.

source
Here is how Gohrlay accounts for her existence on Earth. Lili was visiting Earth as part of a clandestine effort to create some Earthlings who could use the Bimanoid Interface. As part of that effort, Lili gave birth to Peter and Marta and, according to rumor, she apparently also gestated one of the Atlantis Clones. While on Earth, Lili also gestated Gohrlay. In the case of Marta, Lili and Andy are her genetic parents. However, according to Gohrlay, Lili had a zeptite endosymbiont with advanced "ovarium functionality".

1962
It was a trivial matter (although highly illegal) for Lili to use her artificial ovarium to instantiate a "copy of Gohrlay" in the form of a conceptus that she then gestated. Further, Gohrlay claims that for technical biological reasons it is was not possible for Lili to give birth to Gohrlay. Apparently the normal way for Kac'hin to end a pregnancy is by teleporting the baby out of her uterus. Gohrlay claims that she was "born" by being teleported out of Lili.

One of the first science fiction stories about teleportation that I ever read was Theodore Sturgeon's "Baby Is Three", first published as the lead story in the October 1952 issue of Galaxy magazine. I read it when it was re-published in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two A.

According to Gohrlay, in the Ekcolir Reality, Sturgeon wrote a fairly detailed account of how teleportation technology was used within Genesaunt Civilization, including its use for technology-assisted births of alien-hybrids that were too large to pass through a birth canal.
